Defense is abominable.

You trade a WR2 for another early pick and another 3rd.

Draft is crazy deep this year. You can transform a defense with the right stroke of luck of players falling in the Saints' slots.

Worth the risk in my estimation. WR2s are replaceable. And Brees had already proven he can take another teams leftovers and turn them into stars: see Snead.

Good trade as long as Loomis doesn't try and get cute and just drafts players we've heard of and doesn't try and reach with guys like he's trying to prove he can find stars no ones heard of.

Truth. But it's not like this team is a piece or two away from contending for anything. Not having Cooks is not going to cost us in the long run. I mean shite we had the record we had with him.

You have to try and rebuild in THIS draft. To do that you need picks. This draft is so deep that is the year to do something like this.

Just have to have faith Loomis and Ireland won't shite the pot every draft year.

While this is mostly true, our drafting hasn't been terrible the last 2 years.

Last years draft was good on quality but sucked on quantity, only 5 picks iirc. 2015 was a good draft aside from injuries. I'd like to see S Anthony get one more year out of this new LB coach and see if he can progress. He needs to be moved back to MLB, even if it's a backup role.

Exactly. We need to sign a CB and draft best defensive player available the first four picks. Then use that second 3rd round pick for a WR

Unless a good RT of value is there, get him and let him sit one year behind Strief.

Everybody is forgetting that we gave up our 4th. So we only gained 1 extra pick!!

or the first pick of the 2nd round depending upon if your glass is half empty and full.

we essentially moved up 21 spots from round 4 to 3 and got the first pick in the 2nd round for Cooks

No. Everyone who says this is stupid. Did you know that the 22 pick in the first is really just a high, high, high 2nd round pick? If you look at it that way.....

You can't look at it that way though, because unlike in other rounds, there is a massive difference between the bottom of the 1st and the top of the 2nd - the 5th year option. It is a huge deal with the rookie wage scale under most recent CBA.

I think this is an overrated aspect, but that also makes the spot prime trade bait for QB-needy teams at the top of the 2nd. QBs are extremely expensive - much cheaper to pay a 5th year option after year 4 than to give them their mega deal then. If any of those "1st round QBs" make it to the end, we could see someone like Cleveland come up just to get that 5th year option and we could easily pick up a 3rd or 4th.

This "WR 2" stuff is bullshite. Cooks is the fastest player on the team, one of the fastest in the league. Why did the Saints draft him in the first place at no. 20? They drafted him for the deep threat, and production he provided. Is there a rule that says you can't have 2 great WRs? If they wanted to trade him bc he was too noisy and upset the peace and quiet of a mediocre squad. fine, but at least get equal value. The Patriots reamed the Saints on this deal.

No they did not. We picked up another 1st, bettered the 4th pick, unloaded a disgruntled player, and avoided the contract they weren't going to pay a WR2 on THIS TEAM. You can go get fricked. He is a WR2 here. Sorry we didn't get the patriots next 3 drafts for Cooks. Go cry in a corner....

You can have all the picks you want. If you can't hit on the picks it doesn't matter. History tells us this team can't draft

They drafted him because he has the potential to be a #1 WR, and it turns out he isn't physical enough. He is a great deep threat, crazy fast, pretty good route runner, solid hands. But the dude can't win 1 on 1 if the coverage is tight.
