Are Everson Griffen or Carlos Dunlap better than Ray Edwards?

Then why the frick don't we just offer the Vikings our first and throw out a decent contract extension? Edwards outperformed Jared Allen for much of the season last year when it came to the run and generating pressure. He would IMMEDIATELY upgrade our defense and really give it a shot in the arm when it comes to pass rush. I just don't understand why we wouldn't give up the last pick in the first round for a guy that is 25 and has PROVEN that he can not only bring the pressure, but play every down. It makes no sense to me why teams value draft picks so high but don't value young, proven players the same way.

He had 1 fluke game against the Cowgirls and wasn't anywhere close to Jared Allen. If your gonna bring up a random name make it someone better

because he will be trying to kill Drew Brees in practice

My question is how Edwards would do without Jared Allen on the other side, though Will Smith isn't too bad.

Draft picks may present a risk but they also represent cheap labor. Unless you're picking in the top 10 in the draft, you can come away with a contract that is 50 to 70% the value of a veteran contract.

You can't have a team full of second contract veteran players due to cap restrictions; if you did his, the team would be made up of the aging, disabled, and under-performing types.

Edwards is generally considered the 4th best player on that Minny DL. Having Jared Allen and the two Williams dudes certainly helped him as it would any solid player. Kind of like the great year that Darren Howard had when he had Joe Johnson, LaRoi Glover, and Norman Hand to take off the double teams. Darren Howard wasn't special when those guys left him, or when he went solo in Philly. So, imo, he's another Darren Howard. Solid, but not elite.

However, if Gregg Williams can get a 6-6, 275 Carlos Dunlap to do a Hargrove turn-around off the field, you could be looking at the next Julius Peppers. But like the OP said, it can't be proven that it will occur. But knowing Gregg Williams' track record of his developing players in his system gives me confidence though.

We wouldn't have to give Edwards top DE money, because he plays LE which isn't considered a premier pass rushing spot. Look at what Justin Tuck got in a similar time frame. And to the douche up there talking about how Edwards had 1 fluke game... you are a fricking idiot. He played great all year, and improved tremendously against the run. Jared Allen got his sacks, but Edwards frickin manhandled almost every RT he went against.

Look Gregg Williams said his specialty is dealing with personalities and that he gets way too much credit for x's and o's. Well for a guy who's only major flaw is his mouth and immaturity, it sounds to me like a match made in heaven.

Maybe; maybe not.

Edwards is a Restricted Free Agent and the Vikings could match any offer he gets. The history of Restrictive Free Agents shows that teams rarely go after them for several reasons. Teams don't want to spend the time and effort to come to contract terms with the player knowing his team can match it. It's like doing the heavy-lifting and not getting paid. Yes, you could incorporate a "poison pill" in the offer, but no team has done this since the Vikings/Seahawk fiasco 4 years ago.

Their are more RFAs this year than ever before, I guarantee you that you are going to see atleast one of those poison pill contracts before the draft

i think dunlap could better at getting to the qb.. i don't know much about everson griffen except that he's coming off his best season as a trojan with 7 sacks and 40+ total tackles.

Where the frick were you a few years ago when we gave all that money to Grant? Loomis could have used this little piece of informaton.

I can laugh about it now because he's gone

His contract would be comparable to a LE picked in the middle of the first round. So you're talking about passing up on a proven commodity for about half the price but a player who has known weaknesses and has never played a down in the NFL. Not only that, but we then split up the fricking force that is the Vikings D Line. And we have this motherfricker

You might be right. If it happens, it will most probably be the Bears that pull the trigger. Lovie and the Boys have nothing to lose. This next season could be their last hay ride.
