Granted, it is a lot easier for Harper with that supporting cast but he is performing better. Malcolm Jenkins might be one of the best examples of not being utilized to his fullest here. In Philly he's looking like what we were expecting of Byrd here.

Jenkins has the same deficiencies in Philly as he did here. Don't just look at the highlights and think he is a world beater. He still has bad ball skills and takes terrible angles.

At least he has highlights. Only ones here are Browner's penalty flag count.

He's one of the highest rated safeties
He was one of the lowest in new Orleans.

Also, he has 5 interceptions and 22 PDs in 28/games with philly. 5 forced fumbles. In his last 3 years here, when he didn't play well, he had 3 ints and 22 PDs in 42 games. 3 Forced fumbles.

He had 6 interceptions and 38 PDs in 71 games in Nola (12 PDs coming in 2010, when he played well). He had 6 FFs.

He had 12 missed tackles last year. Didn't he have almost 30 in 2012. Had 16 in 2013 in 14 games

Gonna have to say f@ck apologies.

Jenkins was a horrible safety while here. As a pro much of that lies with him. He should apologize for never making plays on the ball, the countless duck head dive at feet miss tackle and always arriving late to the play.

Harper was fine close to the line and we all saw his lack of coverage skills. I don't remember a drum beat to get rid of him but rather to try and improve the position if possible.

In 20/20 I would say it was a wrong move getting rid of Harper but not Jenkins as he just never played well here.

I tend to agree but the Harper bashing threads on here, would have gotten out of control. I consider it a wash.

I would say scheme and the cornerbacks that we had supporting the cast at safety.

It's also worth mentioning that we've had terrible run defense ever since our Superbowl year. It's extremely hard for safeties to play good coverage when you have running backs passing the line of scrimmage almost completely unhindered.

I think it is much more than highlights for Jenkins as TB1127 pointed out. up to being a

I think he is intelligent and a gamer. I thought he just didn't have the skill set for a #14 overall pick. Holes in his game or not, his play is dramatically better. Brains, attitude, and skills but journeyman performance at best here leaves only that he was not utilized properly.

...he's also 10 times better than Byrd.

Is he ten times better..or just playing better? Something tells me Byrd is still feeling the effects of his injury, most mentally. Hopefully he can bounce back in what is set up to be his first full healthy offseason in NOLA.

Contract or not, he and Browner have questionable futures here...

You don't think development is important in the NFL?

I would argue that you grow more as a player in the NFL. Some players come out of the NCAA and just snap into place. Depends on the type of program they come from in the NCAA and the type of program they enter in the NFL.

Some positions like CB and some LB schemes are pretty instinctual and have less to do with learning and more to do with getting to the right place with weight, muscle, and endurance. Safety is one of the hardest positions to play well, IMO. Just given the fact that Jenkins got through his growing years with us, that is ample enough explanation for me why he is catching on better in Philly. I think there is a lot to be said about your supporting cast.

I am a strong believer that success in football begins at the line of scrimmage and works its way backwards. Being bad at the farthest point away from the LOS indicates more than just a bad player at that position. Again, inconsistent pass rush except for Rob Ryan's first season with us. Poor run defense for the last 6 years (we haven't drafted a decent linebacker since the 90s, until maybe this year). Mixed play at corner; losing Greer was basically the jenga piece that sent the tower falling down. It's no wonder why our safeties play like sh*t.

(sorry for the long edits)

Loomis didn't want to pay Harper or Jenkins and also Sproles. Man reason that they were released.
