Anyone have an animated gif of the two roughing the passer penalties?

The NFL is killing itself.

Such hits are NOT going to curb the concussion numbers. Play the game - not a form of it. How do you lead with a shoulder and properly tackle?

The first penalty was bs. The qb ducked as White arrived and took a shot to the head. Had he stood up like a man, it would have been a clean hit. The second one was legit. White launched himself at the QB.

If you're gonna get a 15 yard BS penalty might as well go for the QBs knees

Brandon Meriweather is a noted thug but he does have a legitimate point-

"I guess I just have to take people's knees out," Meriweather said. "That's the only way. I would hate to end a guy's career over a rule, but I guess it's better other people than me getting suspended for longer. You just have to go low now, man. You've got to end people's careers. You got to tear people's ACLs and mess up people's knees. You can't hit them high anymore."

The NFL has unintentionally created a monster here imo! Look at how Randall Cobb got injured.

When these D players are fined it comes from their pocket not the team. That hurts. Intent is a determining factor in my book. No way either of White's hits were intended.

Intent has nothing to do with playing smart. I know white didn't intend to go for the head, but not going for the body on that hit was dumb.

The first penalty was unwarranted, but White should have been more careful from then on.

I wonder if the refs just aren't given much leeway (totally had to google how to spell that) on those calls. The one that always bothers me is when the defender raises his hand to block the pass and when they come down on the QB's head in any way, it's a penalty. Now I get when it's like a karate chop to the helmet, but a lot of times the defender is in the air and can't change direction and actually try to avoid hitting the QB, and will lightly bump their head and get the call. I think I remember Harper getting one against Eli in '09 that negated an interception.

I'm starting to think these rigid helmets are doing more harm than good.

sicboy they actually changed that rule a few years ago. A glancing blow to the head is no longer a penalty. I actually suspect that is why the "facemask" on Drew didn't get called. They determined it to be a glancing blow. I disagree and feel the guy got the facemask but that is one possible interpretation.

Caught a shot of someone telling him to lead with the elbow.... stick that fricker in the ribs and have him caugh up a lung.

cheaper and more effective than a glancing blow to the head.

I thought the facemask was called but was offset by a holding penalty.

I guarantee that many of the hits that are fined aren't intended, but how are you supposed to know someone's intent? Judge and jury?

This. But the head ref either didn't see the facemask or just didn't want to call it, and some of the other refs had to correct him.
