Are people already convinced Rankins is legit?

He had an injury plagued year 1 and graded out as one of the worst 1st rd picks not named Goff or Lynch per PFF. We need depth in the interior to bring him along

Considering the history of the Saints FO of overpaying for FAs, I'd say there's at least a decent chance of him resigning.

He was arguably our best D-Lineman last year. Hopefully they can work out a deal. Can't blame him for testing free agency though.

I'm pretty sure that was only because of the time he missed.

He looked pretty damn good to me.

hopefully he came come back with a decent deal and nothing too over the top.

Our D-line hasn't been very good the last few years but at times last year they looked a lot better and it was thanks to guys like him.

he made a few bone head penalties also though.

Can't have that.

Fairley along the line with Jordan, Rankins, and our young DE stud could be the best line we've had in a long time.

I hope he stays.

Funny how last year, so many said that we should give him a one year "prove it" deal. We did and he proved it. Now that we saw what he could do in our system, many are ready to just let him walk if he demands market value. Is our intent always to settle for a poor DLine if an improved one will actually cost us money? I agree we should not go nuts if the price starts getting into the Malik Jackson neighborhood, but I can easily see him getting a contract in the $8-$10 million a year range (similar to Crawford or Harrison).

He got to the QB a few times but was ranked 106 out of 123 qualified interior defenders against the run

I'm not saying he's a bust or anything close but he's needs a tank to help him at that spot

The Patriots do sometimes handout big contracts to their blue-chip players. But not all of them, or even half. Many times they release them. But the best of them they do keep. However, the difference for us is that the Patriots are much better at talent acquisition so they are in more of a position to do this than we are.

7-8 million a year is right at the edge I'd be uncomfortable with. 6.5 a year is where I hope we land. Over 8 million I say we let him walk we have two good young guys with onyamama looking solid at times and still a raw player.

I might have agreed with your numbers in 2013 or so. The rising cap makes that an impossible number. There is no way that Fairley will sign a 6.5M/year deal. That is very low. As long as the cap continues to rise as much as it is every year, the average value of contracts will rise. We have to be more open about this when we consider what we are spending. We all feel we overpaid for Fleener last year, but realistically it was a market value contract and 2 years from now it will be chump change compared to what will be being handed out. Fairley getting 8-10M is what it is going to take, and 8-10M in 2017 is 5-7M a few years ago.

Underhill thinks 9mil per will be the asking price. I don't see that.

I'm hoping for 7mil or 8mil.

He's a damn good pass rusher, but he's average against the run. He blows up a run every now and then b/c he's quick as shite and blows by his man, but stopping the run isn't his forte. He's a big play guy that disppears at times. That being said...I think he's worth 8mil. Anything more than that is starting to overpay imo, but I'd do 9mil if that's what it takes to keep him.
