Great Doc but damn man it made me get the feels more than once. What courage to look sickness and death straight in the face and refuse to give up for the love of your child. They really show some of his most vulnerable times too. Heartbreaking. It really does make you wonder why does that happen to good ppl? I felt really bad for his wife at times but believe she has handled it better than 99% of other women would have.

I was kind of confused. I don't get Gleason's motivation for doing what he did?

Was he making fun of them? Showing his dad that it was stupid? Actually believed?

The end result was hard to watch but I didn't understand why he got the front of the church and ran. Was it the way they were saying to deal with the pain? And he was saying that the pain was all over his body, so look: I can't even do what I did for a job?

Can someone enlighten me about his motivation to do that?

Great documentary.

My thought was that he was kind of giving an FU to his dad for questioning his faith and let him know this shite is real.

His dad seems to be a born again christian and steve doesnt seem to be religious in the same way. It was pretty tough seeing him and his dad interact. The show was really good in showing how different people react to that type of adversity.

my take was also that he probably thought to himself that it was ridiculous and he wanted to underscore how real his illness was.

I took it as his dad probably pestered him relentlessly about it and he finally caved and thought, "well I don't want to do it but it'll make my dad happy. either I'll be healed or he'll see how phony this stuff is. Either way I'm desperate"

Both your posts make sense.

I guess it seemed put of left field as the doc didn't set up that relationship prior to that scene.

I thought the doc did a great job of really showing you how it affects families, relationships, etc.

Like for all the praise Gleason was getting and how public perception of his bravery was...you have his wife/caretaker over here doing almost everything and getting the whole, "wow you must feel lucky to have such a great guy"

It really gave a raw, realistic view of this horrible disease and made everyone look like humans and not saints(no pun intended). And it still promoted a positive message.

Saw it in theaters back in August....everyone should see it. Even if you're not a football fan, its a truly amazing documentary. If its not nominated for best documentary in the oscars, its a damn shame.

As others have said, I think the whole faith healing thing was him showing everybody that this is what's real. He was showing his Dad his reality. Testing God, his Dad, faith, everyone in the audience, etc. Very true ab him being shown as a person first and foremost under debilitating circumstances. But also showing that that's how heros are made. A person overcoming adversity. His wife seemed very real.

This is exactly how I felt about this scene. I went back and rewatched it to try and understand if he was just making fun of the whole faith healing thing.
