A Question I Pose to the Real Posters on This Board Re: Steve Smith

I'm no cap-guru and don't pretend to be, but why didn't we make a run at Steve Smith when he left the Panthers a few seasons back? I've had him on my fantasy team the last two years, and because of the fact that I watch him so much, I can safely say the old man has PLENTY left in the tank.

Add in the fact that he was leaving a divisional opponent AND Payton and he have been very buddy-buddy and seem to have this mutual respect, and I just can't understand why we didn't sign him or at least make a run at him.

Yeah, he might fade a little as the season wears on, but I think it's become abundantly clear under Payton & Co. that a HOT start is absolutely crucial to our season-long success.

He just seems like a no-brainer high upside veteran sign to me, and I KNOW he would have relished the chance to make the Panthers look stupid twice a year.

And to anyone thinking of hating on me for this post, that's why I posed the question to the REAL posters on the board. Anyone doubting his heart, drive, play-making ability, and realness is just being stupid.

Ice up, son.

Well we did.

We drafted cooks and picked up Byrd. The media and fanbase were cuming with our Super Bowl potential

With how the last 19 games have gone, Steve Smith would have broken at least two players jaws by now.

HA!

Yeah this is not the year to have a violent malcontent on the team.

Why do you assume we didn't?
It seems he wanted perhaps to get out of the division altogether. I have no doubt all three other teams in div would have took him.
I think many here when it was posted he was cut wanted him. I know I posted that I did.
Maybe you can look into why he ended up where he did and post what you find or just continue to think the worst.

Goat, don't treat me like some negative nancy assuming the worst. I'm on the board 24/7 and have been for years, I just don't post much. (I changed my name a while back, hence joining in 2015)

I assume we didn't because I don't recall any noise at all coming out around us talking to him. Usually rumors get leaked, etc. From what I remember, the organization made no run at him at all. And I'm saying it's particularly baffling because Payton seems to respect the hell outta SSS.

Obviously hindsight is 20/20, but I would have thought we make every effort to get him on our squad.

UPDATE:

This just came out today. He was apparently very close to becoming a Patriot. No mention of the Saints

It's not due to his play, I promise you that.

He is LITERALLY their entire offense right now.

At 36, he's carrying a whole offense.

He signed with the Ravens the day after Free Agency started and cancelled all his other trips.

Also, at the time we had Jimmy Graham who was our main target and we had just given him a shite ton of money. We didn't know Colston was on the decline, we had a good young WR in Stills and had hopes that Toon was ready for a breakout year. More importantly we just drafted Cooks who we expected to fill that roll. No need to sign an aging WR who might cause locker room problems.

How many short receivers do we need?

How many old FA's do we need?

This all seems feasible.

It's still surprising I guess...

Especially when you consider how we have traded two of those guys and straight up cut another.

Were we that blind?

I'll take someone like SSS over any other aging free agent we've signed...

You can't deny the guy's heart.

I don't find you to be negative but the timing of asking why would we did not go after him just seems odd at a very odd time on Saints Talk.

That's it? Loomis should sign him to at least a 7 year deal.

I don't know if it was about money as much as it was about a plan to get younger at WR, and believing that Smith was past his prime. You could argue that he is indeed past his prime, but he has a ton to offer a team.

Haha alright, fair enough. I just don't want to be grouped in with the frittatas that have flooded ST lately. I've been around for years, I just don't post much. Plus I used to have a different name. But I really feel like I'm a part of the family.

I too am fed up with this season so far, and the trash it's brought to ST.
