Strength Of Schedule

The correlation between strength of schedule and teams making the playoffs has been extreme in the last five seasons. Teams with a Top 5 toughest strength of schedule in that span have made the playoffs 24.1 percent of the time. Teams with a Top 5 easiest strength of schedule have more than doubled that percentage, making the playoffs 50.0 percent of the time. In 2015, that’s good news for the Falcons, Colts, Texans, Buccaneers and Saints -- who have the league’s easiest schedules. It’s bad news for the Steelers, Bengals, 49ers, Seahawks, and Cardinals – the owners of the toughest 2015 schedules.

One club that shouldn’t complain about scheduling? New Orleans. The Saints only have one set of back-to-back road games, and that is split by a bye in Week 11. There are no cold-weather away contests slated for December. Plus, the Saints get to host three primetime games in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, where New Orleans has won 17 of 19 such matchups since 2008. Combined with the NFL’s fifth-easiest strength of schedule (.429) and NFC South rivals Atlanta and Tampa Bay in rebuilding mode, New Orleans is poised to rebound from last season’s disappointing 7-9 campaign.

Those are interesting stats; however, I wonder how those percentages would change when you consider that only so many teams from a division can make the playoffs.

Teams with a Top 5 easiest strength of schedule ....making the playoffs 50.0 percent of the time

That would imply that 2.5 teams of these 5 make the playoffs; however, 3 are from the NFC South and 2 from the AFC South. While it is possible to have 3 teams from the same division, it is difficult to do.

So that is basically 1 team from the top 5. But, someone has to make it from the NFC West, and they listed 2 of the better teams from the AFC North.

Obviously this will all change as the season plays on and we see which teams truly have the easier schedules. I also believe this whole strength of schedule factor is misleading since they are basing this on last year's records (which is all we can go off of now); and comparing them to results after the season was played. Bc naturally by having a great season, that means your opponents had that many more losses.

He doesn't control the strength of schedule

And i think the national stories about our schedule last year helped us

SOS might be the most irrelevant statistic out there. Who would have guessed the NFC South would have less wins than any other division last year?

I agree with this. The amount of parity in the NFL makes SOS almost irrelevant. Also, teams change so much from one year to the next, trying to predict who has the hardest schedule before playing a game is quite ridiculous

Maybe so, but the spread between easiest and hardest schedules is pretty significant to ignore.
With the ever changing make up of teams because of FA and injuries, the SOS at the beginning of the season is a wild arse guess. I will say that the "when and "where" teams play has a more important impact on the outcome....IMO

...as calculated pre-season...or as calculated at the end of the season. That's a huge difference.

That's not the issue, IMO..it's that SOS is very hard to calculate ahead of time. I'd bet that there is a pretty strong correlation to winning pct and weak SOS if you do it retroactively.
