People jsut can't seem to comprehend that winning fixes all your problems.
People keep tossing out the "kid in Mississippi" or the "kid in China" hypothetical, and claim that those people would certainly not cheer for a lame mascot/logo. bullshite. If you become a godo team, people will like you and the brand will grow.
You think people in China all of a sudden go, "Man I really love lakes. I want to cheer for the Lakers." No. They like the Lakers because they win and they have superstars. Sign a big name Chinese player, have some success, and boom you are everyone in China's favorite team.
The insistence that people keep putting on our viability as a brand based on people not from Louisiana and the name we pick is stupid.

But the brand does need to be viable locally. The problem with Spirit is most of us seem unable to envision it as something manly/macho/aggressive/cool. The right logo could change minds just like that cool Pelicans logo did. But a bad name leading to a bad logo leading to bad merchandise sales is not good. They can probably make 90% of the names that have been thrown out work, Spirit is one I'm iffy on.

Everybody who is acting like my post is retarded is being disingenuous.
I don't think there's any doubt that if we were somehow able to get the old Jazz name and logo back in 2003 that we'd each likely have a little greater affinity for our NBA team. It would have certainly resonated more with the NOLA community as a whole (casual fans, old timers, etc).
To act like me saying I "worry" that a shitty new name might hurt my fandon isn't any more of a stretch than saying that a great new nickname would cause me to buy more merchandise and be prouder to represent my hometown team up in MN.
I'm not saying I'll definitely be less of a fan, I'm being honest and saying that I worry it MIGHT affect my level of fandom.
I don't deserve any disrespect for that. Logos and nicknames are powerful - they are how we identify with our team and the memories we associate with that team. If it wasn't a worthy question then every uniform/logo/nickname thread that somebody starts wouldn't go a minimum of 4 pages. It's a passionate subject.
I associate with the Hornets. I had season tickets and was along for the playoff run. I now live 1400 miles away and won't have any memories with this current roster, coach, GM, AND we'll have new nicknames, uniforms, logos to boot? It's a lot of change. Sure I"ll support the gay arse New Orleans Spirit but I have no memories or experiences with that team.

Winning isn't easy, we can't just snap our fingers and all of a sudden we're the Lakers.

Branding is extremely important for every team.

When the team goes through the rebrand I will support them 10x more and buy a lot more merchandise no matter the name. The organization will need fan support more than ever and I will be first in line to dish it out.

I'll say this much: If a company introduces a line of apparel that makes me think, "I'd look really really gay in that, and so would any other man" I'm not buying it, brother.

I just don't like wearing stuff that looks gay, brother.

Well if you yourself look gay, what would clothes do?

I don't get the joke. If you see a shirt that looks gay, do you buy it?
