+/- is a bs stat imagined by someone who either never played basketball or made up something to try and be relevant.
Hawkins was +10
Naji was +12
AJ Green (who!?!?) was +4
Zion was -2
Herb Jones was -2
Giannis was -2
Please explain how this stat is actually relevant????

Probably better to look at that stat from a whole season perspective vs a single game sample.

It's an ice hockey stat that has plenty of relevance in that sport, since whole lines are substituted at once and not individual players. In basketball it's useless.

Winning the minutes that you are on the floor is a pretty relevant stat if you ask me.
It doesn’t make much sense to use it for players that only played 5 minutes and/or garbage time.
But it is definitely useful for 1-8 rotation guys. Occasionally it won’t make much sense game to game, but over the course of the season, the very best players and bench players in the nba should have some of the top plus/minus numbers.
Even if you are on a poor team like the Wizards or Pistons, but are still having a good individual season, you might still have a negative plus/minus, but it will still likely be better than the rest of your teammates, if you truly played good winning basketball from an individual standpoint.

Eh, +/- is a simple stat that shows how a team did when a player was on or off the floor. It shouldn't be used as a serious stat.

+/- is absolutely one of the worst stats in professional sports, period
Posted on 3/29/24 at 5:28 pm to M3From225
Before I thought that +/- was manipulated by noise and points that a player had no real impact in… but with only 5 players on the court, it’s meaningful. You have to understand how every player affects every other player to understand it, especially on the defensive end

I think sometimes people get too hung up on stats and use them to
Support confirmation bias. You can
Get as much useful information from
watching games carefully.
