NC State's Dereon Seabron has agreed to a two-way NBA deal with the New Orleans Pelicans, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium.

Seabron averaged 17 points this year without being able to shoot. Think about how difficult that is. He doesn’t have the threat of a catch-and-shoot jumper right now and can’t pull-up anywhere. He’s so talented as a driver that he can derive 17 points per game simply by attacking the cup. That’s why I have him as a top-50 guy in the class. If Seabron ever learns to shoot and is willing to engage defensively, he has substantial upside. He’s too much of a project in both of those capacities for me to give him a guaranteed contract. But he’d be among my first calls as a two-way player, because if he does improve, he has a chance to really succeed at a high level. Seabron will probably kill it in the G League next year and force a team’s hand to see how he’d play in the NBA. It’s all about him. If he’s willing to engage defensively, he probably sticks for a while. If he ever gets to even a reasonable level as a shooter, he might end up being an effective player running a second unit.

The Pels drafted someone who is just missing a jump shot?

If only we had someone who could help him with that

Until then, maybe we can build a new practice center out of all the bricks we’ll have.

Looking at highlights now

6-7 wing. This dude is athletic and looks Kira fast. Good on-ball defender. Attacks the rim with drives. 82% FG. Good cutter. Finished thru contact. Draws contact well bc of speedy drives. Damn he’s fast.

Poor C&S. Westbrick 3 misses. Slow shooting release. Hesitates/aims. Sloppy handles. Undisciplined passes/TOS. Loses man off-ball. Gambles/loses on steals.

Offensively he’ll be fun to watch in the Summer League.

NBA draft net

quote:

NBA Comparison: Caris Levert/Darius Miles

Strengths: Seabron is a lengthy, skilled guard who gets to the rim with long strides and a lethal first step … A crafty ball handler and finisher in the lane who showcases polished body control and uses his long legs and arms to his advantage when attacking the basket off the dribble … Potentially the best rebounding guard in the nation averaging over 10 rebounds per game through 12 games … Good ball-handler with an elite Euro-step and excellent transition decision-making … Quick first step and jab step that can send defenders the wrong way while he explodes past them … Creates a lot of space for himself and has the length and athleticism to take on taller defenders around the rim … Can play as a 6’7 primary ball-handler to create size mismatches against smaller guards … Elite acceleration as he can start a fast break off of a simple rebound … Elevates with a high vertical to create most of his rebounds and get the offense moving with pace … Opportunistic defender with long arms and a quick burst to jump passing lanes and pickpocket dribblers. Averaging nearly 2 steals per game … Seabron is simply a unique, lengthy athlete who has the potential to turn into a match-up nightmare with his unstoppable combination of size and twitchy athleticism … Despite shooting just 15% from three, his 70% free throw shooting offers a ray of hope about his ability to develop as a three point shooter …

quote:

Weaknesses: Outside shooting remains a work in progress and a major hole in his game… Struggles mightily as a three-point shooter at just 8-40 in two seasons so far at NC State … Court vision is just average for a slasher of his quality and his assist numbers show that at just 2.8 per game. He should be averaging more assists than this with how much he is used as the primary ball-handler and how effective he is at getting into the lane … Lanky frame that could mitigate his slashing prowess when taking on the most physical defenders at the next level … Can dribble out of control and lose his handle in transition, but that is to be expected with how fast he is able to run out in transition … Three-point shooting and strength are the two major criticisms of his game, but the RS Sophomore’s dramatic improvement this season is a great sign that he should be able to figure out his shooting stroke eventually … He has the confidence to take threes, as he has attempted one in every game this season except for one, he just needs to start making them with more consistency… Effectively the age of a junior having sat out a year having turned 21 in May

I actually recognize this name because I bet his over on rebounds one game during the ncaa postseason lol.

He hit the over, so naturally I like this guy.

He can’t shoot but wasn’t a horrible free throw shooter. Dude can finish at the rim with ease. Everyone knows he can’t shoot but they can’t stop him when he’s driving

In a 4OT game against Nebraska this year he scored 39 points and 19 boards. In an FSU game he scored 32. I really like this signing. Send him to Bham and let him develop. He’s got potential to be in the league.

He sounds like TJ Warren while on the Suns. Can score on anything but jump shots.

Coaches have their work cut out for them. Can't shoot and does not engage defensively. I know he is fast though.

Good news at the least is that he is a two way guy who likely spends the whole season with Birmingham.

Don’t have to spend a regular roster spot on him and we now have a dedicated developmental league team who can give him playing time and instruction.
