The New Orleans Pelicans are openly discussing star Jrue Holiday in trade talks and several contending teams are pursuing, sources tell @TheAthleticNBA @Stadium.

Combine this with what we heard yesterday about the Pels looking to move up and they must really love someone at the top of the draft. Hopefully it isn't Lamelo.

So I like them trading Jru. Here’s the thing and this may sound stupid.

I feel like we are too deep and have to many developmental pieces. And let’s say we add 3 players for Jrue. Like what do we do with everyone?

Minnesota, Atlanta or Golden State will be where he ends up.

Good. He is a good player who you cannot count on to do anything positive when the game is on the line.

Only one of those fits:

I have a feeling this is happening because they couldn't agree on an extension so he has some leverage in the process. Atlanta I can see Jrue agreeing to, but not Minnesota.

I'm not going to lie, as much as we discussed it, as obvious as it seems, I am truly surprised by this.

I just did not think that Griffin would trade a solid vet, huge lockerroom guy, "culture" guy, especially after hiring SVG.

I am going to assume they had an extension talk with Jrue and he would not commit to coming back after opting out.

If that's the case, it is very smart to make this open and get the bidding as high as possible.

Teams that make sense in this context:

Warriors
Nets
Sixers
Celtics
Heat
Bucks
Raptors
Nuggets

I know I just listed half the damn league but its hard to narrow it down when I think a ton of teams will be in play.

I believe we’re going to get a nice return for him. If not, we won’t trade him.

Charlotte? 3 and Devonte Graham? That would be out of left field and certainly not fitting the definition of "contending team".

If Jrue says he's opting out to us he's doing us a huge favor by telling us now. If he wants to go back to the west coast get GSW 1st round pick and do right by someone that has given everything for this franchise.

I'm gonna go cry for 3 hours now.

A little exaggerated but you’re not exactly wrong. I love him as a player but he can’t be more than a 3rd option offensively in big games. I would miss his defense though.

This doesn't mean that's the only teams pursuing him

Don't get me wrong, I love Jrue the man and he is a great two way player, but outside of the Portland series, he has been the definition of anti-clutch when a game is close.

well there's only 1 contending team ahead of us in the draft, and that's GSW.
You can maybe add Phoenix and ATL to that as teams ahead of us in the draft that have a lot of positivity about their very near future and may be interested in a Jrue trade.

Other than that, you're looking at Brooklyn and Boston that have the draft assets and players to make a trade, and a slew of other contenders that have the players and maybe some weak draft assets to make an offer, like Miami/Milwaukee/Pacers/Sixers/Raptors/Denver/Utah/Portland.
