I dont post here really, but I'm a big Pels fan... It is absolutely ridiculous how much our players get injured year in and year out. I understand injuries happen, but it seems to me that it is much more prevalent in our locker room. I dont know if its diet, stretching, weight lifting or what, but something does not seem to be right.

shite happens... Ultimately it's on the athlete to keep himself healthy.

It's the Indian burial ground underneath the SKC. Fact.

I thought it was the tortured soul of the former Voodoo house that the SKC is on.

When Demps came in the first thing he did was replace the previous head trainer. IIRC that guy left after 2 years and he was replaced with John Ishop. Ishop left for Detroit this season and was replaced by long time Saints trainer Duane Brooks. So there has been a steady flow of new blood at the head trainer spot (although all have been internal promotions rather than bringing in someone from the outside).

All reports from when the players talk about stuff they're doing, I think they all are pretty reasonable when it comes to that. Rolled ankles, calf strains, even AD's back are probably not things you can do much about, it's just part of the game. The only really questionable things are Ryno and Jrue. I remember seeing some concerns about their conditioning at the start of the season because neither was able to work out much over the summer. I'm not sure how you handle that any differently though. Holding them out of games for several weeks isn't an option, do you put them on minutes restrictions?

I think it's just one of those years. It's honestly happening all over the league. I'd say OKC and Houston have had comparable injury issues to the Pels this season. Chicago's not to far behind.

I agree. Last year may have been coincidence and outside the norm. Two years in a row is a trend and that shows something is wrong

there was an outstanding article written last year on the PHX staff, I think it was on sbnation. it's worth seeking out...they are regarded as the best in the league and concentrate on individually preventing injuries before they happen, as much as possible

There is a lot of new technology that's come online in the last few years to help diagnose and prevent injuries. The Pelicans really need to be investing in that kind of preventive medicine. Sean Payton indicated a few weeks ago that they do some of that with the Saints, so hopefully the Pelicans will do the same.

Dumb question but... I thought that was the Superdome and thats why we sucked for so long. I know SKC is right next to it but was the burial ground that big

It was huge. As I understand it, Native Americans came as far away as from East Texas to the area around Hattiesburg area to bury their dead. Apparently, it was customary to go out on Bourbon Street after the service as a tribute to the recently departed.

I always thought the Indian burial ground thing was an old wives tale.

I don't know about Indians, but there were definitely bodies

quote:

In 1971, when the site for the Superdome was being excavated, workers were spooked. Their backhoes brought the first skeleton up from the ground. The deeper they went, the more gruesome it got, with caskets and coffins, the remains of the abandoned Girod Street Cemetery. Victims of the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1850 and the cholera epidemic of 1930 were buried there and never claimed by family or kin when the resting place was deconsecrated in 1957. And in a city that takes this kind of thing seriously, the Saints, in spite of their holy name, were deemed to be cursed.

The site looks close enough to the SKC for me

Here's a much more detailed article on it from the TP LINK

Just a thought- but is that much turnover at head trainer common in the NBA, or is it just a coincidence? Could the turnover at head trainer (4 in ~5 years) have any correlation with our rash of injuries? Maybe a lack of resources (funding, equipment, technology, etc) the reason we can't keep a trainer, or keep our players healthy?

I believe I was mistaken. It looks like Ishop was the guy that took over, his bio said he was the head trainer for 4 years LINK Maybe it was another position like a team doctor or something, but I remember Demps comes in, head guy leaves, they promote from within, and then about a year later that guy leaves. It actually got more play on this board than something like that otherwise would have because the guy's daughter did something at games, announcing, singing or something like that. Anyone remember who I'm talking about?

I remember one of the Arena hosts from a few years ago being a pretty popular girl on the message boards. Was her name Brittany? I don't remember exactly why she was popular, though. I want to say she was a Warehouse District favorite, but I could be wrong.

ETA: After some searching, I found who it was

Yeah, that's it

I was right but my timeline was off. Cranston left after just a month when the team was experiencing quite a bit of FO turmoil, so that probably shouldn't count regarding too much turnover.

Mark Cranston, who was promoted last month as head trainer to replace Terry Kofler, has resigned from his duties, team sources confirmed Tuesday morning.

You would have to fire all the trainers in the NBA. Houston has Pat Beverly and Dwight Howard out. Derrick Rose and some others in Chicago. Bryant out at Lakers. Pacers have their Ace out.

The list goes on and on. This season, I think, is the worst I have seen in a long time.

Back to Back games are fatiguing players who then become injury prone.
