I'll miss this dude, we probably won't be the team to pay him. Depending on exactly where the number falls, we should at least consider it.

He's good in his role, an absolute steal and great value.

If we are paying Trey Murphy, we won't be the team paying Naji.

Something has got to give at some point.

I prayed on it and i saw a vision of Tom Benson with Jesus and they told me Gayle should keep everyone. She needs to sell the Saints and use the profits to fund the Pelicans Tax for the next decade.

Don't see Naji getting that many years on a deal. I would guess something like 2/8.

More than this team can afford. Hoping he has value as part of a trade if we make any.

I think Naji is going to get a pay raise next year, and he has earned it. It won't be crazy, maybe a 3/15-type of deal, but that could have significant tax ramifications for the Pels. As such, I'll be surprised if he is on the roster for the '24 season.

He'd be a great sweetener at the deadline. Pains me to type that, though.

He already got that offer, no?

They're both coming up on the next one. Naji this offseason, Jose next.

nah

NAW just got 2 for $9M
Kenny Hustle just got 4/$27M with a club option in year 4.

Naji is much closer to what Kenny is than NAW.

I would prefer to keep him though if we could, but i think it might be difficult.
I'd give him the same deal Kenny got in a heartbeat, same for Jose.

If Trey is going to get paid, then one of the big 3 needs to take a pay cut, and by pay cut i mean needs to get traded, and that's likely to be CJ unless he wants to take a bit of a pay cut to stay with us. With the rising cap, he just needs to make a bit less. His salary goes down from $35M this year to $33M next year to $30M the last year. We'll see where he is at age 35, but he'll make less than $30M/yr at that age i'm sure.

Larry/Kira's $16M are going to go away and get replaced with minimum contracts to give some room for Naji, then Jose and Trey and BI.

IF we are winning and need to keep it in tack, then that's when you pay the tax, in 2026 and possibly beyond depending on CJ.

He’s not going to get a huge contract. I don’t see why we can’t try to keep him. Anyone who says it’s impossible for us to resign him doesn’t know what they’re talking about.

It doesn't mean that they can't sign him to 4/30 and then make roster moves in the next two years.

2025/26 is when the crunch comes.
Nance will be off the books and I think CJ is traded in his last season if BI, Trey, Naji and Jose are extended with both Dyson and Hawkins still in their rookie contacts.

Lots of water to go under the bridge and not worth worrying about until this team shows anything.

I assume after the first of the year that Jake or other bloggers will do a cap analysis in advance of the deadline. Will be interesting...

Agree. However, we cannot assume we will be able to trade CJ to a team with $30 million of cap room. We will have to take back contract value. If we keep both BI and Trey, we will have nearly $120 million invested in those 3 with CJ at $30 million expiring. Something definitely would have to be done before then.

The luxury tax line is estimated to be at $189M in 2026, and i'd bet that's an underestimate b/c the new TV deal isn't known yet and i'd bet this in season tournament buzz that's happening right is going to boost it higher than what was originally thought.
That's almost $25M higher than it is right now, and it will keep climbing steeply with the new deal smoothing it over a few years

Yeah and this is where you offer first round picks to get off contracts.

I don't think in the next 2-3 years the Pel's will need the cost of 1st rounders on their books. Use these for trades and salary dunps and add min players or 2nd rounders.

Yea, I hate it but the deadline on CJ may truly be this offseason.

Yea, but this cap spikes will mean bigger/same % of cap max contracts for BI and Trey.

We're at $98 mil right now for 2025-2026, not counting Alvarado or a single big. That alone should likely add $20mil at the most generous estimation, given you need 3 bigs. Probably closer to $30mil as the cheapest estimate.

Then, if my calculations are corrected, BI's extension would start at $51mil that season. Throw in Trey's which will be probably far north of $30mil, again since it's based on % of cap, and we're quickly going well over $200mil already.

And then on top of all that, the following season is Dyson dn Hawkins due for extensions. It's obviously all wayyyyy into the future and can spin many different ways, but it's all shite the FO has to think about right now when making deals.
