Let's start the player outlook/discussion with a board favorite.

Key Stats:

Brief Retrospective:

EG was god awful shooting wise from the start of the season until his freak injury on nov 22nd:

But after?

He was a little rusty after coming back but he practically couldn't miss from deep. Due to Jrue's injury and the lack of a back up PG until Cole was obtained,he was asked to playmake a bit more and did a great job(only had 2.1 TOs per game and averaged well over 5 asts per during a stretch)

This is an excellent video on how he improved his shot

He played quite well off ball to tyreke and stayed consistent even when the team got healthier. He seemed the healthiest and most explosive we've seen in NOLA. For all of his good things(elite shooting/playmaking/high IQ) he struggled mightily around the rim and around outside(well below league average) and his defense while not terrible(67 out of 91 SGs in DRPM) needs improvement.

(thanks to BSS)

The Future:

EG is a huge fan of alvin "can get a corpse an open shot" gentry and EG is the prefect type of player for his offense.

quote:

t’s going to be a style that’s easy for us to implement, because we have a lot of guys who can put the ball on the floor and create for others,” Gordon said. “That’s the major part. For a player like me, it works out really well because it shows my overall game, as far as shooting, penetrating and getting the ball to the open man all the time.

“What this offense does, it gets you easier shots. Instead of just throwing it to (Anthony Davis) on the block, he’ll catch it on the run, where he’s more dangerous to stop. You’re using his strength, which is running up and down the floor.”

quote:

“How we’re going to play is really going to show everyone’s athletic ability and how they create for others,” Gordon said. “It’s just such a different style of play. Everybody is going to have to be geared up and in top shape. For us guards, it’s going to be easier for us to implement, because we love that style of play. We love to play up and down. We all have to jump on board, and get our legs ready for it.”

The Indiana University product has already had numerous conversations with Gentry and Pelicans coaches about the system and his role. Now entering his fifth season in New Orleans – and in the midst of a second straight injury-free offseason – Gordon believes he and his teammates will benefit from roster continuity. The Pelicans are bringing back virtually every key member from last season, a rarity since Gordon came to the Big Easy in December 2011.

“I think that’s the only way you can win, by keeping guys together,” he said. “Guys like each other on this team, and with this style of play, it’s only going to make it better. It’s all about finding the open man, being unselfish and playing the right way. It’s going to show. It’s always good to keep players together, if they like each other, for sure. A lot of players in the last couple years had a hard time figuring out their roles. From starters to bench guys, a lot of guys had different roles, whether it changed from injuries or whatnot. This year, it’s all about everyone knowing what their role is. This style of play is going to suit everybody: You’ve got good bigs and good guards, for us to mesh chemistry-wise within the offense. Everybody is going to thrive in.”

I expect lots of 3s. He got plenty of open looks last year and with a faster pace on offense he should get even more.

What we get outside of that will be very interesting to see. When Gordon went to the BSS watch party last year against Houston the topic of fouls came up and why the Pels rarely got calls and the Rockets would get many calls. He blamed it largely on the lack of spacing and that the packed paint for the Pelicans obscured the view the officials had. He said Houston got calls because of their spacing. So will the Pels start getting calls now that they're playing with space? That could change everything for Gordon, because he did get fouled quite often on drives, he just rarely got calls.

I sure hope you're right. That's an interesting point and could absolutely be the case.

Never liked Gordon. Imo, his numbers in second part of last season are a fluke until proven otherwise. On the bright side, this is the last year of that franchise crippling contract of his.

To be fair he shot 39% from 3 in 2013.

Over 100 games of him shooting at a 40+% pace is enough evidence that he's legit.

i think his usage rate is going to plummet
when the pels played slow, he excelled
when they played fast, he was useless

Hopefully. The guy needs to shoot 500 3P if he truly is a 40%+ shooter from 3 (im afraid he's not). The true greats will shoot 3s in volume and post 40% every year. I think people are getting a little ahead of themselves with this Gordon being a top 3P shooter in the league talk.

Last year we had this great 3P threat, yet there were 42 NBA with more 3P attempts.

The guy can make up for a lot of bullshite if he comes out firing next season
