How so? The rumors so far are Gasol for other big contract players like Josh Smith or Zach Randolph

Which is exactly why a deal has not gone down yet. With the punitive luxury tax in 2013/14, Gasol's 19 million dollar contract will cost them 52.25 million. That is on top of the 38 million dollars it will cost them in 2012/13.

Randolph only cuts 6 million off of that total. Smith/Pachulia would cost more this year than Pau, and they would have to either pony up for Smith in a year or let him walk.

The Lakers are after financial savings as much as talent.

So you're saying we get Randolph and send Lewis and 10 to the Lakers? Would they do Gasol for Lewis and 10? Seems kind of low for how they overvalue him.

They are also hoping to parlay their assets into a high pick for a guy like MKG.

I'd normally gut-laugh at that, looking at their assets past Pau, Kobe, and Bynum since they have no pick this year and a bunch of shite contracts, but LA has a way of making things work out for them.

I agree with Teke that they want draft picks to get a shot at a top 5 pick. With Washington, Cleveland, Charlotte, and Sacramento all willing to trade their picks, it is not unfathonable.

Unless he is traded to Houston, I think any Gasol trade will be a large multi team trade that gets the Lakers multiple picks and big cap savings. I think we get some assets for sending Lewis and perhaps the 10 to LA while Gasol goes somewhere else. I have no idea what those assets might be, but I do know that Lewis' contract is worth a lot to the lakers.
