It's obviously early, but a lot of people think next year's class will be weak. Only a little better than 2013.

You can't.
But now that the previous draft has passed, we can trade next year's pick.
Its to prevent teams from trading consecutive FUTURE picks.

The rule is fine. The Stepien Rule is to prevent teams from unloading their next few picks all at once because of a cheapass owner.
We used the pick on Asik. We use prior picks on Jrue. It's working just fine.
At some point yes we have to use picks to get roster depth. We are at that point.

I think that's the point a log of people miss when it comes to the Pelicans recent drafting history. And, yes, we've now reached the point that we'll likely use the picks on that year's draft class. Unless, a deal materializes that would be foolish to pass up.
