Devonte’ Graham Video Breakdown

Good video showing the strengths of Devonte’s game.
It’s good to see that he isn’t scared of contact or afraid of attacking the rim. I also did not know he was such a good passer, especially in the PnR. I suppose that makes sense, since he is such a lethal shooter, he commands attention in those situations which opens up easy passing lanes.
Video is about 18 minutes long, gave me a new perspective on the positive talents he can bring to a team.

He will take and initiate contact unlike the Bonzo he replaces.

Something that was said that was a good point, yea Graham's percentage at the rim isn't great, but JV and Zion are two of the best offensive rebounders in the NBA.
If you sag off either of them to help, they should be able to finish the misses most of the time, and if their defender is more worried about keeping them off the board, then that should make it easier for our guards to finish at the rim one on one.
and there was also a play where he drives pass his man from the wing and it's just him and Vucevic at the rim and he easily gets the layup around him. Lonzo would have either pulled up for a dumb jumper, or been looking to pass the ball the entire time b/c he would have never challenged a 7 footer at the rim like that. Graham might not be great at driving to the rim, but he's a willing driver, and you have to do that to force the defense to defend.

I think with Graham's mentality, he's a much better fit when he plays with the bench vs a guy like Lonzo. Graham won't be shy putting up shots especially when he plays with the reserves.

I really don't get the Graham hate. He can get nuclear hot on offense. He is a way better shooter and scorer than we have had in awhile from outside.
He has a great price tag and doesn't rate much lower than Lonzo on defense. I am excited about the signing. go look at his highlights when he gets hot and goes off. There's plenty games where he is Dame lite.

I think everyone likes his addition, I really like it, but it's the fact that we gave up our 2022 1st to get a FA that everyone hates b/c it made no god damn sense. What other team is giving up a 1st to sign a FA? a Bulls team getting a multi time allstar when they didn't have cap space to sign him, and they gave one 4 years out. We have 1 pick in the next two drafts. That's a little infuriating.
We just saw that we can't attract FA's, so making draft picks is kind of really important to finding at least a role player each year, while still holding onto the slim chances you find a difference maker b/c we sure as shite can't get one any other way.

graham > Lonzo and half the price

Still, Graham is a talented scorer. He is way more of a known commodity than a late teens draft pick. You have to make that trade. Like you said we aren't getting any free agents to come here without over paying. Hell we can't even get them to come with over paying if the Hardaway and CP3 rumors are true.
A player like him at his salary you make that trade.

And that’s why he costed a protected first whereas Lonzo just a second rounder

It's not a trade. It's a FA signing, and there isn't some precedent that says we should have had to give up a 1st to do this S&T.

I understood the Hornets would've matched the "low" salary without the 1st

fine. let them if that's what they want to do, have 3 PG's on their team, two of them under 6'1".
If they really would have matched, then fine, go sign Kendrick Nunn, or go make a trade for someone else. Do you believe that Kira can be the starter by next year? if so, then go get someone like Dragic that you can have for a year, and maybe you get an asset by bringing him in too. Could probably get Beverly with an asset. There were many other options out there that didn't involve us giving up a 1st to sign a FA.

But none of those guys were going to sign with us….
Kendrick Nunn took less money to play with the Lakers, Hardaway took less money to stay with the Mavs….
It is what it is….we gave up compensation to make our team better and at a reasonable salary. Graham can potentially play with starting lineups alongside NAW, Ingram, and Zion….or with Kira and second units. Either way it’s a step in the right direction that gives us cap flexibility going forward.

Has anyone actually watched Graham play in games, not his highlights? His shooting looks good in the highlights, but his percentages outside of 3 and FTs are bad. Does he just have horrible shot selection?

His 37.7 FG% last season was the worst by any player with 650+ attempts. Survey says, horrible shot selection. Ton of iso too. Not a good combo
That said, he’s nice spotting up and in the catch and shoot. Better shot selection would certainly lead to a more efficient scorer.

Hardaway stayed with a team he likes, and is still making a boat load of money. His situation is not comparable to Nunn.
Do you honestly think that Kendrick Nunn would rather sign for 2/$10 in LAL than sign a 2/$20 here?

no one else has to do this when signing a role player FA to a 4/$47M contract.

Maybe….it hasn’t been reported whether we tried to sign him or not, but he also didn’t sign with anyone else either….
He’s hoping to catch that Lebron shine for a season and get a bigger payday next offseason….just look at Caruso.

A guy that’s a much better fit than the guy that is getting 4/$85M and will result in an easier time for your stars.
