David Griffin press conference

Happening now. I will try to post some tweets from it, not listening.
quote:
Griff says Lonzo has told the team 1-on-1 that he wants to be with the Pelicans.
quote:
Griff comments that his team is 13th best in scoring differential and 8th in the West.
But he recognizes the record as well.
Basically, says it's typical of a young team.
quote:
Griffin: We are moving in the right direction.
quote:
Griffin says everyone who is playing consistent minutes for the Pelicans is living up to team's expectations of for their growth and maturation.
quote:
Griffin admits he probably didn't give the coaches enough defensive versatility on the roster to start the season.
quote:
Griffin on Zion, BI and Lonzo: I think they've shown flashes of being an incredible group. They've also shown some flashes that are disappointing.
quote:
Griffin makes an interesting point that he views Zion as a playmaker more than a big.
Says Zion's natural instincts are more like a guard rather than a big man. It's a big reason why we don't see him in lineups as a center as much.

I would agree with everything except this. This is a straight up lie lol

He's pretty clearly referring to the young guys, not Bledsoe, Adams etc

That's what I got from what he was saying.

He said, NAW and Lonzo will play together and Kira and NAW will play together as well.
Bledsoe is riding the pine!

Yes. He even goes on to explain why he said that using Kira as an example and the lack of a summer, G-league, or offseason training as the reason for the expectation to be exceeded.

Not yet. No answer will be sufficient though. Dude needs to sit.

I know it's Grif and he's not just going to sit there and outright say that Lonzo doesn't want to be here right after he didn't get moved at the deadline, but this is really encouraging to hear.

Griff on the kids.
He said after the New Year's break Jaxson
On Kira
On NAW
He said after the New Year's break Jaxson
quote:
came back with a totally different mind set and he has attacked the weight room the last 6 weeks or so in a way that he hadn't. I think he's completely bought into the realization that he can play multiple positions and that he can guard virtually anybody. He knows what his strengths are and I think as he continues to learn how not to foul he'll continue to be on the court longer because offensively he's incredibly, incredibly gifted and I think you're seeing that night after night now.
On Kira
quote:
I think Kira Lewis is playing significantly more than we anticipated when we drafted him. I think we even said this about Jaxson last year, if he redshirted it would have been fine with us. Unfortunately there was no GLeague season really at the time that our season started for him to continue to get reps and Kira came into this with no Summer League, no GLeague, no Pre-Draft workouts. So for him to be as good as he is already in NBA games as a 19 year old kid is mind numbing. And like Jaxson he's among the very hardest workers on our team, he's incredibly diligent in the weight room, his attention to his player development workouts with Theresa Weatherspoon have been incredible. So I think you're seeing him grow and evolve rapidly, far more rapidly than we had any right to believe he would.
On NAW
quote:
Nickeil Alexander-Walker is somebody that we believe very strongly is a starter in this league. And when he's had consistent opportunities to play minutes I think he's shown that. I think he had a stretch of games where he was not particularly very good playing consistent minutes, but he's also shown incredible flashes of brilliance and we think as he grows and evolves as a player he's going to show more and more of those and less and less of the frustrating times.

I do feel for Lonzo. He does seem to get an unwarranted amount of criticism. I think that just has to do with the spotlight his Dad put on him from the very beginning. Even as he tries to separate himself, it still follows him around. I don't think he'll ever be a 20ppg type of scorer, but we just need him to be more consistent. When Lonzo plays well, the team wins. That's just fact.

Griffin didn't really address anything we didn't know regarding to Ball. When he mentioned Ball told him that he wants to be with the Pelicans, he never said long term, past this season, or anything that's reassuring. It's no different than the reports out there saying Ball wants to stay here through the season and enter RFA.
He danced around talking about the motivation of the trade talks with Ball. Offers no clarity and still didn't address where Ball stands with the team past this season. Leaving a lot of uncertainty out there.
My biggest takeaway was Jaxson Hayes. Pretty much admitted he was not committed early on in the season and something changed after the post new year break and has completely bought in since then. Working hard in the weight room now. I wonder if he had a heart to heart with his father.
Said Kira one of the hardest workers in the weight room and they didn't expect him to contribute as much as he has due to the limitions of the Covid protocols all the way back to predraft workouts.
When he was asked if NAW and Lonzo would play more together, he did says NAW is seen as a starting caliber player and he would play with Ball more but he emphatically said NAW and Kira will start playing a lot more together. Which was an interesting note to add.
All in all, Ball's future is still uncertain and we'll continue to speculate through the summer.

THIS is why I was glad we drafted him where we did. I care not if he reaches his potential this year or even next. As long as he continues to mature, he will be a VERY importantbpiece to a championship club. Super athletic 7' guys do not grow on trees. With our team length, we can switch and not have anyone truly overwhelmed (excluding Kira). Hayes, Zion, BI, Lonzo, Hart, NAW...all these guys have decent length.

That tells me he wants to see how those 2 do together so he can know if he can move on from Ball this Summer and feel safe about it.

maybe but ball is still a talent that is not good when walks out door for nothing. maybe ball is signed and traded and we acquire other different type of asset back. Bledsoe needs to go. I don't mind Adams here... probably a great influence on Hayes and we need two capable bigs.
