The Post cites a source “close to the situation” that claims that Diamond is losing money for Sinclair and is in danger of going bankrupt.

Sinclair bought the networks from 21st Century Fox for more than $10 billion in 2019. That purchase gave the company broadcasting rights to more than 40 major professional teams.

Leagues are believed to be exploring contingency plans if the regional sports networks go belly up. which range from broadcasting games themselves, streaming games regionally on established platforms like Amazon, Apple TV, or Peacock, or even launching their own streaming services

Wouldn’t be the first time external forces have saved the Pelicans from themselves.

Going with this one even though the other one is a much better title. It was technically first.

So:

HELL YEAH.

It’s time to modern up. Just launch your own damn services.

Is this really a good thing or could this leave us with zero options to watch the games in 2022?

Depends what happens.

NYP article in the other thread says that games will still be broadcast but that teams won’t get paid if they go into bankruptcy.

It is said that hedge funds are buying up enough of Bally’s debt to try and force a bankruptcy by the end of the year.

The leagues buying the RSN’s and broadcasting the games themselves would be the ideal situation imo

Amazon or apple+ makes a lot of sense, actually.

I saw they go full LIV golf style and just slap those live streams on YouTube and watch your fanbase grow

Guarantee more people watching Pels games live on YouTube right out of the gate than on whatever is left of Ballys

Yeah both Amazon and Apple(or Disney for that matter) make a lot of investment sense. Assuming they get a good chunk of teams they can have in their portfolio, maybe negotiate a set of national games too.

if I were owner I'd like YouTube for away games but if you do then other teams would duplicate and undermine your home games.

I already watch summary YouTube's of games not in my regional tv. its not great. the version is biased for the crew calling game so you may only see 80% highlights of the other team.

Oh yeah the OTT big dogs will keep fighting for content - you’d have to believe the NBA would be high on that list to gain traction

So I was looking for some updates here and saw a couple days ago the Clippers cemented a new deal with Bally's so I have no idea what that means about this whole story?

quote:

The Clippers and Bally Sports finalized their new television contract Saturday, The Times has learned, in a deal that ends months of negotiations between the sides and keeps the majority of the team’s game broadcasts on a channel familiar to its fans.

quote:

The overall length of the deal was not disclosed, but the agreement is said to last multiple years, according to people familiar with the contract but not authorized to speak publicly on the matter because it has yet to be announced.

quote:

Bally Sports will televise 63 games during the 2022-23 season, and the broadcasters who have called Clippers games in recent seasons will all return

Update 2: And apparently in what I think is a solid move by them the Cavaliers are covering the cost of Bally Sports + for their season ticket holders

Never mind. I didn’t see it was just for STH.
