Great article from Mason at BSS asking a blogger that covers the DLeague about Diallo's progression.

quote:

what have you seen from Diallo that you think will best translate to NBA success?

CR: The traits which immediately stand out as translatable for Diallo are his defensive instincts, rim protection and overall athleticism. His block rate in 26 D-League games this season is an impressive 6.69 percent (Rudy Gobert’s is 6.31 percent) and he uses every bit of his 7-foot-4.5 inch wingspan to block shots both on-ball and as a weakside defender. He’s grown as the season has gone on in terms of knowing where he needs to be defensively as well. Early on he was chasing blocks and leaving the weak side susceptible to offensive boards when he did not block the shot. Now, he’s staying home or jumping just enough to alter an opponents’ shot without a complete sellout. The other really impressive thing I’ve noticed while studying film on Diallo is it feels like the vast majority of his blocks stay in bounds, often sparking an offensive break for his team.

It amazes me how the Pelicans aren't giving him a chance to have more playing time. The way they have handled him has been so bad.

Seems like a waste of a pick at this point.

The main prioritee now is to have in-season training camp between AD-Jrue -DMC.

This is the only reason not to play Diallo.

Dell is evaluating his options with DMC. He wants to know what players are best suited for this trio.

Diallo is work in progress. He may see some playing time in the last 2-3 games of the season.

I am fine with it. Diallocan learn a lot even from trainings with AD/DMC.
He will be our main force in the Summer League.

Don't see a concern here.

Care to elaborate?

As bad as most of our bigs have been this year, he could have gained real experienced learning from before we reached the end of the season. We would start to know more about what we have with him.

First, he was a 2nd round pick, most 2nd rounders don't make it past their first contract and 40% never play a minute in the NBA, so you saying he was a wasted pick is not properly valuing the pick that was used on him.

Second, he hasn't been ready. Buddy Hield lost the Pels games. They would rarely play him at the end of games because his defense was bad, a trait that is almost universal with all rookies, even the ones that come into the league known for their defense. Heild had the worst Value Over Replacement Player rating on the team, the worst +/- at -2.6 and one of the lower NetRtgs at -6.3. The only current players with lower NetRtgs are DMo, Quinn Cook, and Diallo.

Playing Diallo would have lost the Pels games. I watched the first minute of his first DLeague game and pretty quickly turned it off because he was so bad, over playing for blocks just like the DLeague expert said. I'm glad to hear he's improved in that area and am glad he didn't do that in live games that the Pels were trying to win.

he could have gained real experience

According to the article I linked to it sounds like he did gain real experience and improved in areas where he showed deficiencies earlier in the year. He barely played in college, so this was kind of like his freshman year in many ways.

I think you're also underselling the DLeague. It's being used more and more by teams. For this season "An all-time high 135 players on NBA Opening Night rosters have NBA D-League experience, representing 30 percent of the league."

One Pels writer has been expecting a Clint Capella type of career arc for Diallo, something the DLeague expert said too. Capella played 90 minutes in just 12 games as a rookie but averaged 19 MPG in his 2nd year and is now a full time starter in his 3rd year. Diallo will never start for the Pels with AD/DC in front of him, but hopefully he can give them 15-20 MPG next season and be the 3rd big the following year.

The Dleague blogger Mason interviewed, Chris Reichert, ended up writing an article on Diallo too. Not too much new information but there are a ton of clips, so if you like dunks and blocks you should check it out.

Also, he expanded further on the Clint Capella comparison.

quote:

The Pelicans should look to one of their Western Conference foes in the Houston Rockets and follow the model they used with Clint Capela. The Rockets used the D-League to hone Capela’s skills his rookie year when they only gave him 90 NBA minutes. In his second year however, he played almost 1,500 minutes (19.1 per game) and is now starting in their frontcourt.

Diallo’s D-League stats (15/8.5/2.4) are comparable to Capela’s (16/9.7/3.0) and while Capela is more of a low-post option, Diallo’s overall skillset is actually more polished at age 20 than Capela’s was.

The one game I saw him in he looked completely lost. He definitely needs to spend some time in the d league.
