Dear Dell Demps,

Please don't spend any money this year unless it's for a super-star. (D-Will.) Also, please buy a late first round pick in this draft.

Keep your powder dry until 2013.

Signed,

Sane Hornets Fans

Exactly. I was tearing my hair out listening to the Hornets247 podcast as they were calmly discussing signing middling players to $9 million per year contracts, effectively killing our chances at landing true stars. Ugh.

For Christ sake, if you aren't going to go big than don't go at all so we keep getting lottery picks.

With Ariza gone, could put more or a motivation to get a Gay/Iggy deal done.

If Memphis wants out from Gay's deal for financial reasons, maybe we can work a deal where they get Lewis' deal and the 10.

That lets them out from about $37m in long-term committments and "saves" them $3m this year, all of which can be used to retain OJ Mayo and Darrell Arthur, while also giving them a lottery pick in a deep draft.

I'm less sure of how to work out a deal with Philly.

Their only real contracts are Elton Brand ($18m, likely to get amnesty), Iggy ($14.7m with $16m option), and Thaddeus Young ($8m, 3 years with $10m option for year 4).

Unless they're enamored with the 10 pick or some of our supporting guys, I don't see them dealing with us.

Why Dragic when you could shoot for Deron or CP3 and have realistic chance of landing them?

I'd rather Spend twice as much on Gay than anything at all on Dragic - at least Gay is at a position of need.

Sf: Chase Budinger (long, athletic, can shoot the 3)
C: Ian Mahinmi (Why not, young could develop)

Realistic options

Pretty sure Houston picked up his option.

So do lots of teams, and lots of teams have cap space this off season. I think he gets at least $8 - $10 million.

The ones with options? Most of those had to do so already, with Jameer Nelson being given an extension until June 30 by the league.

I think the following has happened or will happen, based off searches-

Deron, Jamal Crawford, Ramon Sessions, and Louis Williams are now FAs.

Jordan Farmar, Jamal Tinsley, Matt Carroll, Chase Budinger, Elton Brand, and DeSangana Diop are all coming back.

Jameer Nelson's still deciding, likely leaning toward "opt out" so that he doesn't get traded.

I think Phoenix has the inside track on him, as he used to play there and they have cap space out the arse to pay him if Nash bolts.

He said he would like to stay in Houston, but then again he hasnt had $8-9million a year thrown his way yet.

If he comes back at that price, someone will get a sweetheart trade for Kyle Lowry.

He doesn't like Kevin McHale and wasn't happy to miss a bunch of minutes to Dragic last year.

I bet the Hornets take a look at Aaron Brooks. Could be a nice spark off the bench.

So what'smthe time frame for all FAs to make a decision?

Say we go after and sign DWill. What is the latest this can happen? Or any FA for that amtter.

The FA negotiation period starts July 1, first day of the new league year. I think signings can begin around July 7 or 8.

A player is under no obligation to sign before a certain date. However, there tends to be a big rush for players to sign once the top few FAs decide, as that ensures there will be cap space available for a good contract.

Deron may take a while, IMHO.

If Brooklyn wants to keep him, they need to get some additional talent to back him up.

Dallas could make a play for him but, outside Dirk, their roster isn't much better than Brooklyn's. They'd probably have to find a taker for Brendan Heywood or use the "stretch provision" to waive him in order to free up cap space for additional talent.

The stretch provision allows you to take a player's cap hit over twice the length of their contract plus one season. Since Heywood has 4 years left, Dallas could take the cap hit over the next 9 seasons.

If he wants the Lakers, then LA and Brooklyn need to work out a trade because LA has no cap space.

Howard will also be a wild-card in this, as he could be shipped anywhere if the Magic's front office decides that they've had enough of his shite.
