Googled it. Sounds like mostly bullshite. Kind of a "not really focused on it" excuse.
What's the real reason TOOL doesn't allow their music on Spotify?

Doesn't pay enough?
You want to hear Tool? Buy their albums.

They don't allow their music to be used/sold digitally. They're not on iTunes either.

Some bands realize how little revenue there is to be generated from streaming services such as Spotify.

The real reason is that they believe in the experience of the full album listen and they think that streaming their music will only have people listening to their singles. Garth Brooks has claimed the same thing actually.

Zeppelin did a similar thing--they never released singles because they wanted their music listened to as an entire work, rather than little snippets.

If I remember right, there is a dispute on how the record contracts were structured. Mostly inked at a time that pre-dated digital distribution. I'd have to dig to find it, but I believe they get virtually nothing if they OK'd the digital releases so there is no incentive for them to do so. That, plus the album in it's entirety thing.

There's a few I've noticed who aren't on Spotify
Tool, Garth Brooks, Taylor Swift, Bob Seger off the top of my head

I remember reading last year that TS was in some legal shite with them and pulled her music off Spotify. She used to be on there.
I just found it odd tha Tool isn't on there because APC and Puscifer have every album on there. Different bands, I know but damn I wish they were.

Here's a more important question: Which comes first - the next Tool album or the next Game of Thrones book? The wait for both has been a bitch.

Tool is on Pandora. I'm listening to them right now.

Legal shite my arse. It was either right before or right after her album release that she took the music down. She knew what she was doing.

from a spin article:
quote:
Tool: Maynard James Keenan’s band doesn’t have a unique reason for staying away from digital music – like many on this list, he doesn’t want his band’s work consumed in random pieces. Unlike most, though, Tool is truly committed. The band’s music isn’t on iTunes or Spotify and it has never allowed its label to split up its songs into a greatest-hits collection. Gotta respect those principles.
