When people started saying things like

The "greatest... of all time" obsession that seems so prevelant especially in hip hop/rap is mind numbingly stupid. It drives me frickin bonkers, and it has no place in intelligent conversation about music or other forms of art.

While the thought of naming something the "absolute best ever #1" can sound silly, the arguments it creates are usually great reads.

Most versatile or technically proficient guitarist or most influential whatever for whatever reason are interesting conversations. There's actually something to discuss there. "He be the greatest rapper/beat maker because he sold x amount of albums and won a Grammy and is just straight bad arse" is a vacuous discussion. You can have a discussion about music without one thing having to be better than the other. It's more interesting if you allow things to be more complex.

it's in everything. Can we just appreciate that Tom Brady is great with out debating is he the GOAT? If Kentucky wins the NCAA and goes 40-0 someone will ask are they the GOAT? It's just ridiculous.

I apparently should have made the thread title "when did mainstream music start to suck balls"

C'mon man, mainstream music has pretty much always sucked balls. Just go browse through Billboards top 10 all those years you thought music was great. You're going to find crap crap like Archies "Sugar, Sugar", Bobby Goldsboro "Honey", The Association "Windy". Are those on your ipod... I mean CD changer?

That said, it's obvious music declined after 1965.

You should change the thread topic to "Why am I so old and lazy?"

Except for sports and conservative talk, haven't listened to the radio in 15 years...

Me either save for these guys...........

Volunteer Radio

In Memphis, entirely public supported with non-paid DJs and workers that give their time to the station. They play all kinds of music and their DJs really, really understand their particular genre. Find a DJ whose genre you like and you will love it. My favorite is Soul Stew on Saturday night, I hear 2 to 3 new artists every Saturday and I am fairly well versed. A very nice job by these folks. Available on the net, tunein radio and probably other media. Check 'em out.

Music has always had its peaks and valleys. 1968-1974 was one such peak. The 80's were a roller-coaster ride of bad music with occasional greatness. The 90's were a mess. I would say the death of Robert Plant's son marked the end of the upward trend. The downward trend started with the death of hair metal in 1990. The death of grunge was when the decline became even more precipitous. When pop/punk died, there was simply no rock and roll left to replace it.

In my opinion today's mainstream music is absolute garbage, I do have Spotify and almost all my music on there is stuff from the 60's through early to mid 90's. What are some bands you enjoy listining to who have come out in the past 10 years?

Gaslight Anthem
Streetlight Manifesto
Rise Against
Zach Brown Band
Mumford & Sons
Foo Fighters (granted, they existed in the 90's)
Alter Bridge
Trombone Shorty

Hate all you want, but there's not a lot of great mainstream rock bands that have come out since 2004. Most still playing on the radio were popular before then.

There is a lot of good music out there, but it is not in the mainstream. Heck, Baton Rouge doesn't even have a new rock station anymore.

No it hasn't.

There is always always always great music being made. Saying "music has its peaks and valleys" is akin to saying" the overall talent level in colllege football has peaks and valleys". No. They aren't gonna stop making musically talented people, just like they aren't gonna stop making 250 lb dudes who can run a 4.6. If you think there is any not-insignificant time period where awesome music wasn't being made, that just means you weren't listening to much music.
