There was a really interesting piece about them recently. I'll have to figure out where it was. I think an excerpt from a book about the NYC music scene in that era. Lots of first person accounts of them, Ryan Adams, some John Mayer mentions I believe.... then 9/11 and the music industry changes catching pretty close in there all really gutting the scene. Was a fascinating read.

I'd love if you could find a link. From what I understand Julian, the lead singer, fell into an incredibly deep depsreissive state.

Julian stroked out. Downward spiral.

Interesting read. I might need to pick up that book. Basically Albert Hammond Jr. was The Strokes version of Topper Headon.

Pretty much my favorite band of all time. I still appreciate songs from the newer albums but realize it will never get as good as 'is this it'. One day I would like to know the true dynamic of the band, but it's safe to say drugs played a part.

If you are still looking for that strokes sound, take a listen to Albert Hammond Jrs solo work. Great hooks with the strokes tone.

Room on Fire and First Inpressions of Earth were also fantastic. Brings me back to high school and early college days. Every song of those three albums were incredible.

Oh for sure. Room on fire is just below is this it in my mind. First impressions is where they started to slip for me. It has some really great songs on it, but also some of my least favorite strokes songs. As a whole I would actually put it behind angles and on par with comedown machine.

Don't get me wrong, I still love all their albums, it's just theyve evolved over time and we'll never get that garage rock sound again.

I still remember where I was the first time I heard last night, it was like something clicked in my head. For me it was like my grunge music, just the right sound at the right time in my life. Hopefully they pull it together for one more album.

I've had it on my list for a summer read. Seems like it covers a lot of really fascinating dynamics that intersected in turn of the century NYC

I agree with most of your opinion, they are one of my favorite bands ever. But I will disagree with first impressions being worse than anything that was produced after. They should have just stopped after that album. I've never been more disappointed with an album than when angles, or whichever one came out after the hiatus. I just remember thinking, why did they even bother?
