Top guitarists who went on a SOLO mission

2 favorites off the top of my head:
John Frusciante - RHCP
Clapton - Cream/Yardbirds
Frusciante kills it in his own right. He has some great jams and I might add his own style separate from what he does well with RCHP. Clapton ... enough said.

Doesn't count. Meg is irrelevant.
I have to agree with everyone putting John at #1. I was really happy when he announced he was leaving RHCP again. I much prefer his solo work from a style standpoint. That said, Flea's jazz album, Helen Burns, was pretty good, too.
Does Frank Zappa count?

Apparently in your quest to be butt buddies with John, you forgot about the Raconteurs and Dead Weather. It's ok. I forgive you.

Seems like you are the one brochamping here...
It was a joke. Point being White Stripes = Jack White. Meg added little to nothing. Thus, Raconteurs and Dead Weather came after Jack White... Let me know if you need a flowchart.

Mark freaking Tremonti. He's had an unbelievable amount of success so far with his solo project.

Very true. I put him right up there with Frusciante as far as tone and phrasing goes. Absolutely love the emotion those two can convey.
