re: The Story Behind "Red Barchetta" by Rush

When Moving Pictures came out I skipped Period 2 Chemistry in High School and went to buy it at Sears. I had spent the preceding summer vacation driving around Yellowstone National Park while listening to 2112 and Hemispheres in the back seat of my parents 1978 Monte Carlo. I was WAY primed for Rush. Covalent bonding and electron orbits were not important that day. Since I only played albums once, to record them on Maxell XL 90 cassettes, I did that that morning before returning to school just after lunch. There was a gathering at my car after school, everyone was blown away by Moving Pictures...La Villa Strangiato level blown away - with the whole album. We lived Moving Pictures, then Fair Warning, and then Diary of a Madman ad infinitum in 1981. I also was going out with one of the hottest girls in school. 1981 was just a great year.

As good as Moving Pictures is, I prefer Permanent Waves. For me, it's the perfect synthesis of where they were going and where they were coming from.

The car was kept in pristine condition specifically for the nephew.
I understand the lyric. Obviously the nephew is fairly young, so the initial decision couldn’t have been to exclusively preserve it for him. That had been ongoing for years (I believe) before the nephew was even born. Thus, my little quip.
I’m assuming that the uncle had no children of his own, perhaps had never even married. For this reason he probably established a special bond with his nephew and made the decision in the lyric at some unknown point in the nephew’s life. Just my .02.

By far Kafka’s favorite Rush tune.

my best friend in jr high was big into cars (Porsches to be specific) and had a subscription to R&T, so i actually read the story long before the song came out and recognized it’s origin immediately
for those unfamiliar, the Barchetta (Italian for “little boat”) was the name given the 1949 Ferrari 166mm:
in the early 90s while my wife was in vet school at MSU, the band i was in took the time from playing Smiths and Pixies covers to learn a stripped down version of the song (guitarist was a big Alex Lifeson fan) - i thought we did a pretty fair job with it, despite the singer having to drop some of the vocal parts an octave

According to Wikipedia, the song is based on a short story from Road & Track Magazine:
It's worth pointing out Richard Foster's epic post from 2007 on a BMW motorcycle forum giving his side of the story. There are even some follow-up replies from Richard from as recently as 2020.

That's an awesome post, thanks for sharing. Anyone who hasn't read Ghost Rider needs to do so immediately.

I always took the term "air car" to mean the motor was pneumatic, and not internal combustion. I have no idea though.
