Nerds, miscreants, hedonists, sensualists, malefactors, villains, delinquents, heretics, criminals, rogues, rascals, wrongdoers, scoundrels, wretches, lawbreakers, degenerates, rakes, hoodlums, libertines, evildoers, profligates, culprits, knaves, sybarites, voluptuaries, perpetrators, debauchees, rapscallions, philanderers, roués, reprobates, blackguards, friends, romans, and countrymen, lend me your ears...

The age of chivalry is gone; that of sophisters, economists, and calculators has succeeded..

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

V. The Band

Who are the current members of the Disco Biscuits?
Allen Aucoin - Drums
Aron Magner - Keyboards
Marc "Brownie" Brownstein - Bass/Midi Keyboard
Jon "Barber" Gutwillig - Guitar/Midi Keyboard

Why was Marc not in the band in 2000, and for how long?
Marc Brownstein and the other members of the band were having personal differences in the latter part of 1999, and in early 2000 (January 11, 2000, to be exact), Marc announced that "they do not wish to continue touring with me as their bass player". In an internet message board post, Marc had this to say:

"Hey all, this is Marc Brownstein. As many of you know, there has been trouble in paradise. The end result is that the other three members of the band have told me that they do not wish to continue touring with me as their bass player. Thus, I have been asked to leave the band. Although I am shocked at this decision, I wish to emphasize that the last 5 years have been a most unbelievable experience. And, as I have been left without a choice, I have no regrets. I would like to thank everyone for their undying support and I will miss you all greatly. "One day you're all locked up...the next day you are free.'
Much love, Brownie :-)"

Jordan Crisman played multiple shows with the band during Marc's hiatus and was widely believed to be a possible replacement before Marc's surprising return at the Crowbar on 07/12/2000, where Barber announced that they "just wouldn't be the Disco Biscuits without one Mr. Marc Brownstein".

What did the rest of the band members do while Marc was not in the band?
While Marc was gone, the Disco Biscuits played a few shows as a trio, semi-affectionately referred to as The Disco Triscuits. It was just Jon, Aaron and Sammy, with each member taking turns playing the basslines. Some shows it would be Aaron doing the bassline on the keys, other times Sammy would man the bass while DJ Maurcio would take over drums on his Roland MC505. Meanwhile, they also auditioned/jammed with some other bass players at shows, including Carol Wade, Clay Belknap, Bill Stites, Anthony Rogers-Wright, Rob Derhak, and Jordan Crisman.

What did Marc do while he was not in the band?
During his break from the Biscuits, Brownstein took the time off to polish his bass playing skills, form a new band, and write some new songs. These songs include some now Disco Biscuits classics like Home Again, Triumph, Kamaole Sands and Humuhumunukunukuapua'a.

Marc also formed his own band known as The Maui Project during his break from the Biscuits. Debuting on 4/8/00 at the Wetlands in New York City, The Maui Project featured Marc on bass, Jamie Shields on keys, Max Delaney on guitar, Dave Hoffman on drums, Paulie Herron on percussion and DJ Stitch on the turntables. Although they were only together for one show, The Maui Project is an important part of the history of the Disco Biscuits, as it allowed Marc to write and debut some new songs that would eventually become Biscuits staples.

Who is Kevin Abrams?
A friend of Jon Gutwillig's, Kevin is credited as the author of the beginning bass line of Basis For a Day. Fittingly, Basis was originally dubbed, "Bassist For a Day".

Why is Sammy no longer in the band?
Sam Altman left the band in 2005 to pursue medical school. After ten years with the band, his last shows were officially 8/26/05 and 8/27/05 at Camp Bisco IV.

Why is Jon called "The Barber"?
Legend has it that back in his days at the University of Pennsylvania, at the frat house, Jon would force people into a barber's chair that was in the living room and feed them shots. Because of these actions, he eventually became known as Jon "The Barber".
Whether or not this is true is highly disputed, but it is widely accepted as the reason behind Jon's nickname.

Who are the Digital Buddhas?
The Digital Buddhas are a group of fans who choose to attend Biscuits shows completely substance free. Reappearing in late 2005 for the New Years run, The Digital Buddhas have tables set up at Disco Biscuits shows to provide a place for substance free fans to meet and to provide support and assistance to like minded folks.

VI. Song Trivia (part 1)

Is there a song called Bert?
The song has been called by both names, but according to the band, the "official" name of the song is Little Lai.

Is there a song called Splattums?
When the song Svenghali was first debuted, the band did not name the song, so a bunch of the fans took it upon themselves to call it "Splattums", which stuck for a while (some people still insist on calling it that). There is also a song called Crickets, which has the word Splattums in the lyrics. There is currently no song that is officially called "Splattums", however.

What happened to My Lady Survives?
My Lady Survives, an early composition by Barber, disappeared from the rotation after 10/31/1998. It became the ending section to another Barber song, Haleakala Crater, debuted on 08/11/1999.

What is an inverted version of a song?
Consider that a basic Disco Biscuits song (Song A) has three parts: A beginning composed section, followed by a jam, followed by a composed ending section.

An inverted version of a song will almost always happen when they jam out of a different song (Song B), and segue the jam into the ending section of Song A. At the exact point of the ending of Song A, they immediately play the beginning of Song A, then the jam section, which usually segues into a different song (Song C), or the song that proceeded the inverted song (Song B).

Example:

Non-Inverted Version of a song:
Song A (Beg.) -> Jam ->Song A (End)

Inverted Version:
Song B -> Jam -> Song A (End) -> Song A (Beg.) -> Jam -> Song C

(Available on Transfusion Radio Broadcast #4)

5/28/06: Story of the World -> Inverted Digital Buddha -> Story of the World
(Available from LiveDownloads or for free at the Live Music Archive)

The band starts a song one night, and finishes it the next?
Sometimes. Once the songs were be broken up into pieces like inverted and dyslexic versions, there was nothing to stop the band from playing the beginning of a song one night and the ending a different night (or vice versa, of course, for a dyslexic completion).

What is the Hot Air Balloon?
The Hot Air Balloon is a rock opera, written by Jon Gutwillig, that was debuted on 12/31/98 at the Silk City Diner in Philadelphia, PA.

For the full story see here

What is a "dub" version of a song?
A "dub" or "reggae" version of a song is a slowed down version, often complemented by a "juicier" bassline and calypso sounds a la reggae. It's simply altering the tune/tempo to give the composed section of the song a different feel. Most common are Floodlights>Dublights (4/28/01, for example) and Mindless Dribble>Dub Dribble (5/8/01, 5/28/03, etc.)

What is a song fakeout?
A song fakeout is when the band builds up the end of a jam exactly like they would for a given song, then instead of playing the actual song, they stop and start playing a different song all at once. For example, on 10/02/1999, there is an Basis For a Day fakeout, with a fast techno jam in the same key as Basis like it was usually played in '99, then the band dropped into Above the Waves at the last second.

What are the differences between the Big Happy, Highwire, and I Remember When?
Originally conceived as a 40-minute version of the tune, Mindless Dribble, They Missed the Perfume was written piece by piece on a computer. As the band wrote the various parts of the Dribble jam, they worked out a theme that would be called The Big Happy, first debuted inside Mindless Dribble on 10/6/2000. In working out the album, they began to divide Mindless Dribble into songs. From these jams, Spacebirdmatingcall, Highwire, and I Remember When were formed. Highwire is simply the Big Happy with a bridge and lyrics. I Remember When, the closing piece of They Missed the Perfume, is meant to be a synopsis of the album, incorporating snippets of Dribble, the Big Happy/Highwire, and Spacebird. When I Remember When was debuted at Bonnaroo in 2002, it was given a set of closing lyrics.

As the songs have been played, they've begun to take firmer shape. The Big Happy has clearly become a much more concise (about 30 seconds) theme. And in order to synchronize the band for a segue into the more complex I Remember When, the Disco Biscuits have used the Big Happy as a launch platform. Because I Remember When starts off with Jon playing the Big Happy theme, there is often confusion about the distinction between the two songs. However, the bassline and drumwork at the start of I Remember When is clearly different, and I urge you to seek out a standalone version of I Remember When if you're having trouble hearing the difference.

What were the "Movie Jams" on the Fall 2001 Tour?
In the spirit of Halloween, the special mini-run in the oft-neglected Pacific Northwest, and the much-ballyhooed Akira Jam, the band played a series of improvised scores. Though the full Alice in Wonderland jam was marred by DVD playback issues (and as such, no sync is possible), each score offers its own unique session of lengthy improv. Run Lola Run featured the first segment of the film. Clips of Koyaanisqatsi were played throughout a unique opening jam that started out of DJ Mauricio's set. And the Linus and Lucy/"Great Pumpkin Jam" featured a sped-up version of the Peanuts classic.

VII. Song Trivia (part 2)

Is there a song called Pilin' It Higher?
No, not really. The name comes from the song Pilin' It High. Originally played as a fairly straightforward rock tune, the song got an overhaul by the Perfume, a name the Biscuits have played under for special events. On 5/28/2003, they played alternate versions of their songs (including a dub Dribble, techno I-Man, and honkytonk Sound One). This break beat version of the song was loved so strongly by the fans, that with the exception of a special birthday request and a rendition by the Perfume, the rock version of Pilin' It High has been replaced by the reworked break beat version. However, to distinguish the two, many have taken to calling the old version Pilin' It High and the new one Pilin' It Higher.

Is there a song called WaWa?
No. Just like Pilin' It Higher, WaWa was an alternate name given to a song played by the Perfume on 5/28/2003. The electronic version of 7-11 was certainly a discothumping dancefest, but as of yet it has not been played again. For those of you not from the east coast, WaWa is a similar type of store to 7-11.

What is a "techno" version of a song?
Like the "dub" version, it is simply an alternate way to play a song. The most common techno versions are I-Man and Pilin' It High, and they've been played so frequently now that often people forget there used to be another style. A "techno" version of a song involved dropping a song's usual drumwork for a four-on-the-floor house beat complemented by heavy hi-hat work. Additionally, the bassline is often more thumping, following very crisply the more emphatic techno beat. While electronic music purists may cringe at the misuse of the term "techno" to describe what is essentially a "house" version of a song, they'll just have to deal with the nomenclature.

Techno I-Man has varied over the years as their style of playing has progressed. Some of the more well-known versions of the song are 3/14/99, 12/4/99, 10/27/00, 12/29/02, and 5/28/03. For a comparison to a non-techno version, 5/6/99 is a perfect example (and you can hear the roots of King of the World taboot). Most of the versions from 2003 and 2004 are techno versions and are often not noted as such on the setlists because it had become so commonplace.

What is a dyslexic version of a song?
Referring back to the Inverted example above, except the beginning of Song A does not immediately follow the ending.

Basically, a song is considered dyslexic if it is broken up, similar to an inverted version, but the song structure is played out of order or not immediately following each other. The band might play the end of a song in the first set, then start off the second set with the beginning. This would be considered a dyslexic version of the song.

Example:

Dyslexic Version:
Song A -> Jam -> Song B (End), Song C, Song B (Beg.) -> Song D

References:

1/4/07: Above the Waves -> Dyslexic Svenghali (End) -> Paul Revere -> Dyslexic Svenghali (Beg.) -> Confrontation

Is there such thing as an "Inverted Dyslexic" version of a song?
NO.

Even though the whole Inverted/Dyslexic nomenclature can be confusing at times, there is technically no such thing as an "Inverted Dyslexic" version a song. A song can either be Inverted or Dyslexic, but not both.

What seems to confuse people the most is when a song is played Inverted, but broken up. People figure that because the inversion is broken up, it could be considered both Inverted AND dyslexic, but this is not true.

Take, for example, the 12/29/06 Reactor -> Save the Robots -> Confrontation -> Save the Robots -> Reactor palindrome from the TLA. The Robots is inverted, although it might not seem like it is at first. Looking at the setlist, you might be quick to say that the Robots is dyslexic because they play the beginning, then another song, then the rest of Robots. This is true and ALMOST sounds like a dyslexic version, but to understand this completely you have to see just HOW the robots was inverted. After the jam out of the first Reactor, they segue into the ending of Robots. After the ending, they immediately go into the beginning section. That right there is the inversion. After that they start up the second jam section and instead of completing the song like a normal inversion, they go into a straight up Confrontation. Once the Confrontation is finished they segue back into the Robots, right where they left off. You could call this a "Broken up Inversion", but definitely not "Inverted Dyslexic".

What is a Palindrome?
A palindrome, as defined by Mariam-Webster dictionary is:

A word, verse, or sentence (as in "Able was I ere I saw Elba") or a number (as in 1881) that reads the same backward or forward

In terms of Disco Biscuits setlists, this term refers to a string of songs that, when read on paper, is the same forwards as it is backwards. Take for example the very first Palindrome, played during the first set on 5/1/99 at the Wetlands in New York City:

1: Mulberry's Dream , The Overture > Basis For A Day > Vassillios > Basis For A Day > The Overture

As you can see, the entire first set, with the exception of the Mulberry's opener, if written backwards would still look the same. Palindromes are similar to sandwiches, except that a palindrome must contain AT LEAST three different songs, while a sandwich only uses two. In the case of the 09/08/01 palindrome, four different songs are used.

What is the Chemical Warfare Brigade?
The Chemical Warfare Brigade is a rock opera written by Marc Brownstein during his break from the band in early 2000. It was originally debuted by Marc's band Electron on 8/19/2000 Trocadero Theater in Philadelphia.

VIII. Rock Opera #1: Hot Air Balloon

The entire story of the rock opera, produced as a student film in 2004, is shown here to the song of "Once the Fiddler Paid". Obviously not all of the songs, but all of the plot is acted out. It's the greatest, most terrible video. Keyword: student. LINK

The story behind it all...

Hot Air Balloon is a rock opera written in 1998 by Jon Gutwillig, guitarist and founding member of The Disco Biscuits, a Philadelphia based trance fusion jam band

Characters

Corrinado
An unemployed wayward inventor who bounced aimlessly from idea to idea, until he invented the world's first aircraft, the hot air balloon. He was convinced by Morris Mulberry that the idea could be profitable and that the two of them should start a service shuttling people across the sea in hot air balloons. The business, called Hot Air Balloon Traveling, became successful and attracted the attention of Manilla Trane, the entrepreneur whose capital ran much of the town. Corrinado refused to sell Hot Air Balloon Traveling, and even worse, kindles a romance with Manilla's beautiful wife, Leora of the Sequoias. Manilla forcibly overtook the business and had Corrinado arrested and sentenced for building "the devil's flying machine."

Leora of the Sequioas
The young trophy wife of Manilla Trane, known throughout town as a terrific chef. She earned her nickname because of her height as well as the size of her hair, which, according to the townspeople, looked as if were held up by branches. Lack of attention from her husband turned her into an insomniac, and she was often seen late at night staring out the window of the high tower of Manilla's fortress.

Manilla Trane
Extraordinarily wealthy entrepreneur whose riches allows him to control the entire town. As a young man, he began to amass his fortune by peddling weapons. He possesses a small army of extremely loyal men who will do his every whim. An avid arts collector, he married Leora of the Sequoias on the steps of his brand new museum. He is known as an extremely demanding and unforgiving tyrant.

Morris Mulberry
A somewhat conniving, albeit benevolent, street hustler. He convinced Corrinado that the two of them could start a highly successful business by using Corrinado¹s hot air balloon invention to shuttle people across the sea. He mysteriously vanished one month after Hot Air Balloon Travelling was destroyed and Corrinado was arrested.

Diamond Riggs
A well known loan-shark and old street friend of Morris Mulberry. He put up the initial capital to start Hot Air Ballon Traveling. A very aloof individual who, according to town rumor, possessed the prototype hot air balloon, which he was given as collateral for his initial investment.

Act I

Scene I - The Overture
High noon - townsfolk fill the center square for lunch. There is much commotion. Horse-drawn carriages line the outer streets. Merchants are yelling their pitches into the crowd. Street performers are miming and dancing in front of onlookers. The echoing sound of the street charmer's horn can be heard ricocheting off of the buildings.

Scene II - Once the Fiddler Paid
Corrinado sits alone in his prison cell, staring out the tiny barred window, over the jagged cliffs, and out to the sea beyond. The noon sun is high, the sky is clear and a comfortable summer wind blows through his cell. He thinks about Leora, his lost loved one, and he is plagued by the haunting vision of his fate.

Scene III - The Very Moon
The scene moves to Manilla's estate, before the arrest of Corrinado. We catch a glimpse of the relationship between Manilla and Leora. Manilla has reaped the rewards of many successful business enterprises. He works too hard to pay attention to his wife Leora, needing her only as a chef. Manilla invites Corrinado and Mulberry over for dinner in order to discuss the propositon of buying Hot Air Balloon Traveling. Corrinado and Mulberry are not willing to part with the business. As the scene ends, it becomes clear that Corrinado and Leora are enamored with one another, leaving Leora wondering whether Corrinado is the man to fly her far, far away.

Scene IV - Voices Insane
The scene shifts back to Corrinado's jail cell, the night before he is to be burned at the stake. Starved and beaten, he has given in to the demons which are living in his mind. He knows that there is little chance to escape his fate, yet he dares the audience to condemn him for what he has done. Half-crazy, he sits alone in his cell dreaming of Leora, laughing aloud at the world which had condemned him.

Scene V - Eulogy
The prison guards come to take Corrinado away to be executed. He walks defiantly through the crowd as they taunt and jeer at him. He remains calm and seems completely unmoved. His gaze is fixed on the sky.

Act II

Scene I - Bazaar Escape
Corrinado is strapped to a pole in the center of town. Manilla's troops are preparing the fire. Leora has arranged for his feet to be left untied. At the last moment, he pulls on his ropes with all his might, tearing himself free. He charges into the town bazaar as Manilla's troops pursue. His only chance of escaping is to make for the cliffs and jump into the sea. With a hoard of troops on his heels, he swan dives off the cliff into the sea far below.

Scene II - Mulberry's Dream
Corrinado swims through the sea, his only chance of survival is to make it to the island; hoping that Morris Mulberry will be waiting with the prototype hot air balloon, the only one left undestroyed by Manilla. As he swims, he gets delirious from pure physical exhaustion. He thinks back to his friend Mulberry and the beginning of Hot Air Balloon Traveling when Mulberry persuaded him to use his invention to start a successful business.

Scene III - Above the Waves
Mulberry stands alone on the island with the hot air balloon engine burning. He waits all night in hopes that Corrinado will make it. Eventually, he starts to despair, realizing that even if Corinado managed to escape his execution, there is no way that he could make the long swim across the ocean. He gives up all hope of Corrinado's survival, puts out the balloon engine, and sits there in the darkness. Out of the darkness, he hears someone shouting his name in a faint voice. He looks out but still he sees nothing. He thinks that his mind is playing tricks on him, and decides that it is time to move on and start his life anew. He is about to leave when Corrinado's soaking wet figure emerges from the darkness.

Scene IV - Hot Air Balloon
Corrinado embraces Mulberry. He stares in awe at the hot air balloon. The fantastic pipe dream that had become his greatest joy had also led to his persecution. He starts up the engine and takes off, flying over the sea to rescue his beloved Leora. Leora waits lying by the sea on the beach. She frets about whether or not Corrinado has survived As dawn approaches, she sees a speck on the horizon. Corrinado has arrived. He sets his balloon down on the shore. Leora climbs in with him. They take off together, never to be seen by anyone again, flying off into the sunrise.

Cast

Amos Anderson
A large fellow from a very young age, Amos was raised in rural Tennessee. He is a rugged, handsome fellow, but has never been considered the brightest guy by his peers. He doesn't have many friends and spends a good deal of time drinking and fantasizing about what could have been had he decided to finish high school. Instead he dropped out so he could get a job and be a little more desirable to the very few women in the surrounding towns. Sufficed to say, many years later he is quite the opposite. He has very little actual ambition, very little money, and is extremely unsure of himself. Any time he really had had a chance with the ladies, he seemed to blow it. Meeting Shelby Rose seemed too good to be true, but he never thought twice when this sexy young women threw herself at him one night at Albert Lai's compound‚ currently out of work, hasn't had any work since he had a job doing carpentry at Albert Lai's compound a few summer back. Seems to be trustworthy and considers himself a good friend of Lai's and to no-ones surprise, Lai feels the same way...

Albert Lai
Albert, or Bert, as his close friends called him, was always a very mysterious character. He never really talked that much, but always seemed to be enjoying himself in any situation. Nobody who knows Albert in town really knows what he "does" for a living. Everyone in town had their ideas. He has held a residence outside the town in the foothills for three years. He doesn't really seem to work or need any more money than he already has. He has what seems to the locales to be an extremely extensive security system, especially for the area, a notoriously crime free district. But he has been host to some of the greatest parties that have ever been thrown in the neighborhood, at least in Amos' memory, and there always seemed to be an abundance of alcohol and women at his compound. Bert has numerous residences, but has spent most of his adult life running a money laundering operation out of a Newark, New Jersey restaurant called Empire Hunan, and has strong connections to organized crime families in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Chicago, and Kansas City. His compound in Tennessee was rarely used for business, rather was used as a place where he could entertain potential business associates, friends and family.

Doctor Edwin Von Statdt
Pronounced properly his name translates to Edwin of the City, which was fitting, except he was born in New York City, not Munich, where his ancestors were from. The Doctor hadn't been called anything but Doc or Doctor in many years. He has been a chemist for thirty years or so. He has a twenty-year-old son named Lukas who he hasn't seen in years. He grew despondent around five years ago when Lukas' mother, whom he had lived with for many years but never married, took Lukas and left. He transferred to the local university several years ago after many years without tenure at City College of New York. He felt that the change of scenery would be good for him as he got older and he hadn't felt better in years. He is an aloof man, whose mind is wandering in the gaseous clouds of his laboratory, even if his body is parked on a barstool at one of the several local watering holes. He doesn't really have a great deal of money, but on the other hand, he never really wanted any. But something about living in the country changed all that. Maybe it was the lack of excitement or the lack of noise, or just seeing that mansion up on the hill and wondering how much it would cost to have a place like that. He liked the country, but if he could have his way, he'd live somewhere a little warmer. He would be much better off on the beaches of a far away place like Fiji, Micronesia, or the Galapagos.

Amy Willard
Amy is a thirty-three-year-old agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, although you'd never imagine her to be a day over twenty-two…she had always wanted to work in law enforcement. Her parents had always expected her to go to law school, just like her father and two of her brothers, but she had other ideas. Amy had never been the same since she had seen Silence of the Lambs so many years ago. Graduating after just seven semesters at Georgetown, she went to the FBI training center. She graduated from the training program six years earlier and qualified for undercover work when she was twenty five. After spending two six-month stints living in college dormitories in similar drug stints, she was transferred to her third undercover job to the local university, where it was believed that a young man had immersed himself in a large operation of producing and distributing amphetamines. In her second month at the school, under the alias of Shelby Rose, her investigation had ended her up at Albert Lai's compound for an all night party, where rumor had it, several ounces of the unnamed drug was going to transferred from one person to another. It was at this party that she became curious that something larger than they suspected was going on in the area. The drug ring seemed to have links to several other major metropolitan areas, and she suspected possible mafia ties. It seemed that hanging around at the compound, and Bert was a sucker for having young college girls at the house, would be in her best interest.

Plot

The Plan
The Plan was simple. Amos knew what was going on over at Bert's. When the construction jobs dried up at the compound, Bert had told Amos that he could come to him if he ever needed anything. It was when he repeated himself and said emphatically, "Anything", that Amos understood. Amos always turned down Bert's offer for "legal" work. But one night at in a drunken conversation with the doctor at a local bar, Amos finds out about a chemical that the doctor is working with at the University. The research indicates that the chemical kills anything that it comes into contact with, but that it leaves virtually no trace of itself. The research project on the chemical, which the University had named Veritin-22, was originally funded to see if there could be possible uses for it as a pesticide, but the research indicates that there is no control over what it kills. It kills basically everything that it comes into contact with, and the doctor speculates in passing that even a small amount could kill a large population of buffalo, or elephants, or monkeys, or even people. And as a product of the chemical decomposition, it wouldn't leave a trace of itself. The perfect chemical weapon. They decide to have a meeting with Albert Lai to see if any of his friends could use such a powerful stealth weapon. Both of these guys need a big score. They do some simple math and realize they could potentially put hundreds of thousands of dollars in their pockets, if their consciouses could take it. And hell, to these guys, that's like millions.

The Meeting
The Meeting took place at the compound, which Amos was happy about, as any trip to the compound was more exciting than his average day. And considering that he helped build it, he knew the ins and outs of the place, which made him feel smart, which he liked a lot. The idea intrigued Lai and he liked the fact that a scientist was involved. Actually, his first thought was that the Doctor may be involved with the authorities, but he knew a quick background check would clear up any of his concerns. He figured that they could all make millions with his connections in China and Nicaragua, and the Doctor indicated that he could basically produce an endless supply of this as long as the "research project" continued. Lai was definitely interested, as long as everything checked out okay. He insisted that the Doctor and Amos stick around for one of his patented shindigs, which was already going on outside the cabana at the pool. When the meeting adjourned, they allowed themselves the pleasure of a few drinks and some casual flirting with some of the local college ladies.

The Party
The party was fantastic, from the viewpoint of Amos. They left the meeting and went to the bar. Of course, the parties, although large and exciting, were invite only. Bert insisted that they meet some of the girls that were mulling around. He introduces Amos to Shelby as a business associate, which made Amos feel important. Shelby acted really interested in everything that Amos said as he was the first business associate of Lai's that she had meet who seemed vulnerable. In the two months that she had been hanging around Lai's there was never any talk of business around the ladies. Never. She couldn't seem to penetrate his business dealings, until she met Amos. She sensed his weakness and figured she would go even deeper undercover than her job had ever required. But that was Amy, always going the extra distance, and besides, this guy actually seemed really innocent. And he was attractive. And she hadn't had any sexual relations in some time. So Amy, or Shelby as Amos knew her, engaged Amos in the time of his life. He was in love immediately. A beautiful, smart, funny girl, and she was young, and best of all, she seemed to like him. When the Doctor was passing out near the guest house, Shelby and Amos were sitting quietly by the pool getting to know each other.

The Deception
What seemed like weeks went by and Amos couldn't believe it. This was his first real girlfriend, truly amazing. Walks in the park, hikes that led to waterfalls, and trips to the zoo packed Amos' next few days. He spent all of his free time, which was most of his time, with Shelby. He even let on to her that would take a vacation together to the islands as soon as some money came in, which would be soon. You see, the future was bright. He was nervous that she would get bored of him, and so he told her how rich he was going to be, hoping that she would stay with him. It was not before long, and not without ample prodding by Shelby that Amos told her all about the plan to make the chemical weapon and sell it and retire to the islands. The Chemical Warfare Brigade, he called the three of them. She finally had some insider information into Albert Lai's dealings. And it just so happened that her knowledge of the plan could save potentially hundreds of thousands of lives. But then the plan changed. Amos ultimately convinced Doctor Von Stadt that if they left Lai alive they would end up dead, and if they made the chemical, thousands of people would die. Amos was able to convince the Doctor that killing Lai was absolutely necessary. They could always back out, but they were already knee deep in this thing. And the truth was, however they could get the money, they would at this point. So they revamped their plan yet again. It was official. Plan B. Go in shooting, take the money, and get the hell out of there.

The Confrontation
Everything went exactly as planned. Amos knew all about the security systems on the compound. He had installed most of them. They came in and took out one guard, and then went for the security mainframe. When it was disengaged, they waited at the bottom of the stairs for the second guard. As he came down the stairs, they took him out. They went up the stairs to Lai's office. Before he could even say anything, he was shot. A shootout with the three bodyguards that were remaining ensued, and Amos and the Doctor were the last men standing.

The Outcome
As they left the house, they heard the helicopters, and saw the floodlights. They heard the sirens in the distance. The cops were there. Already. The Doctor never told anybody about this. Who had Amos told? Before Amos could even give a reason for why it was okay that he told Shelby what he was doing that evening, the Doctor, formally a meek man, turned his gun on Amos, and at once, removed his face from what was once his head. And then he started to run. He ran for his life. And as he ran, all of the facts of the story started to flash randomly through his mind. Flashbacks. He is running so hard, he starts to hallucinate. The lights are shining from the sky. There is faint screaming in the distance, and he knew that the law was on his tail. He has always stayed in good shape, but he was never prepared for this kind of a chase. The Doctor, when backed against the wall by a group of screaming agents, knows that there is only one thing that he can do. He realized that he can not live through the horror of a trial and a life in prison with a possible death penalty. He knew the truth. Death was an inevitable part of life. Everyone's time would come, and his had. He had had fantasies for many years. Big dreams. Maybe in another life. The doctor turns the gun on himself and pulls the trigger.

Songs

Plan B

P.O.V. of the Doctor. It sets up a flashback situation. The story starts with the Doctor running down a narrow path in the middle of the night, setting up the theme of the story, life and death, and the preparedness for the inevitable. The verses of the song explain a little history of the main characters. The Doctor never thought that he would ever become the type of man to be in the middle of something like this. He was a scientist. That was his talent. He never imagined doing anything illegal, although for some reason he also thought he'd never get caught.

Little Lai
Is a story about Amos, the Doctor, and their connections to Bert, the quiet and calm leader of an organized crime group in New Jersey. The first verse is a recount from the Doctors perspective, explaining the fact that he leads a simple and frugal life. It is not until he sees the inside of Bert's compound that he truly got excited about the money that they were going to make. The story of the meeting and the party are referenced in this song.

And the Ladies Were the Rest of the Night
The Ladies is told from Amy Willard's point of view. He wouldn't give it up…she couldn't seem to get any information on Albert Lai, and she knew he was at least involved in her drug investigation. She tried to get a tap into the compound, but the security was too tough. And Lai never spoke business around the Ladies. She knew upon meeting Amos that he was the weak link. Just a hunch. She pursued him and went beyond the call of duty, shall we say, DEEP undercover.

Floodlights
This song serves as a reminder to the listener that as the story is being told, the Doctor is still being chased. The lights are swinging back and forth from above, and he continues to run for his life. In the distance are sirens, faint yelling, and dogs barking. The Doctor is coming to grips with the fact that he is, for the first time ever, actually facing death. And it is during Floodlights that the Doctor first realizes that he has the power to end this all.

Shelby Rose

The lust song. Amos, thinking that he is in love, recounts the excitement he feels for his new relationship. And for Amos, every night with Shelby truly is Heaven sent. The irony is that this relationship is the best AND worst thing that has ever happened to Amos.

Chemical Warfare Brigade
Back to the Doctors point of view. More thoughts from the Doctor about his present situation. The Chemical Warfare Brigade, as he and Amos jokingly called the three of them in a drunken stupor one night, actually did represent the only chance that these guys ever had for prosperity. At one point, the future was bright, but now the Doctor knows what the outcome of this all is going to be...

Three Wishes
This song is a side bar to the main plot, and flashes forward several weeks past the end of the story…it is told from the perspective of the Doctors estranged son, right after he received the news that his father had passed. The son had not seen him since he left for Tennessee several years earlier. They were not extraordinarily close. Lukas was a musician in an aspiring band. His father didn't disapprove, but didn't necessarily approve of this decision. Doctor Von Stadt started to grow distant after his son's mother had left with him eight years earlier. But his son had actually planned a surprise visit to his dad, when his band was taking his first national tour, which was taking them through Nashville and Memphis. He never had the chance...

Confrontation
This is the story of the end. This song explains why the Doctor had to take the life of Amos. It is among the Doctor's last moment alive. In the end chorus he claims, "And for the moments time I wish I had the nerve." And in the next moment he finds the nerve, and with the pull of the trigger, the story ends.

X. Side Projects

What is The Maui Project?
Playing only one show on 4/8/2000, The Maui Project was Brownstein's band formed during his time away from the Biscuits in '00. It consisted of:

Marc Brownstein - bass
Jamie Shields - keys
DJ Stitch - turntables
Max Delaney - guitar
Dave Hoffman - drums
Paulie Herron - percussion

The show (at the historic Wetlands Preserve in NYC) was the debut of a number of Marc's songs that would be later played by the Disco Biscuits: Triumph, Home, Home Again, Kamaole Sands, Humuhumunukunukuapua'a, No Matter (which would turn into Sister Judy's Soul Shack), Ulua, and Grass is Green. Additionally, the band played a few new cover songs (the Beastie Boys' Gratitude and South Park's M'Kay) and a couple Marc songs that have yet to be played again (Freedom and the instrumental Tension). And because it was Marc's birthday, Aron and Jon both came out to jam throughout the second set.

What is Electron?
Electron is another band put together by Marc Brownstein during his break from the band in 2000. Marc returned to The Biscuits before Electron's first show, so Magner took over as keyboard player (originally, Steve Vidaic from The Motet was slated to be the band's keyboard player). The first Electron show took place at the Trocadero Theater in Philadelphia on 8/19/2000 and featured the first complete performance of Brownstein's rock opera "The Chemical Warfare Brigade". The original band lineup included:

Marc Brownstein - Bass
Tom Hamilton - guitar
Aaron Magner - keys
Joe Russo - drums
DJ Stitch - turntables

Marc closed that show with a rendition of M.E.M.P.H.I.S. that began with him on acoustic. It then progressed as the rest of the members of the Disco Biscuits joined him during a loop of "It's good to have you in the band"; lastly, the rest of Electron joined them to close the show. This trend continued, as Electron and the Biscuits played interlocking sets again on 8/19/2000 and 4/16/2001.

What is The Cookie Dusters?
A side project of Jon's, The Cookie Dusters played a handful of shows in 2002 including Galapagos in New York City, The Conduit in Trenton NJ and at Bisco Nights in Boalsburg, PA. The band lineup included:

Jon Gutwillig - guitar
Joe Russo - drums
Mike Greenfield - drums
Ira Tuton - bass
Tom McKee - keys

What is Sucker Punch?
Sucker Punch is yet another side project featuring Marc Brownstein and Aron Magner of the Disco Biscuits and Jamie Shields of The New Deal. Debuting at the Endless Mountain Music Festival in Union Dale, PA on 7/19/2003, the lineup included:

Jamie Shields - keyboards
Aron Magner - keyboards
Zach Velmer - drums
Marc Brownstein - bass
Mike Greenfield - drums, E-drums

From this project came the song Macina Verde, which has made it onto the Conspirator album. Moreover, it is rumored Caterpillar evolved from this song/project.

What is Kitty Splitter?
Kitty Splitter is a side project of Aaron Magner of the Biscuits and Tom Hamilton of Brothers past. Playing only one show on 11/12/2003 at the Pontiac Grill in Philadelphia, the band consisted of:

Tom Hamilton - Guitar, eDrums
Aron Magner - Keyoards and assorted gadgets
Mike Greenfield - Drums, eDrums
Clay Parnell - Bass

and featured appearences by:
Tom McKee - Keeboards
Rick Lowenberg - Drums, eDrums

What is Moshi Moshi/Moshi Moshi Baby?
Moshi Moshi consists of Aron Magner on keyboards and Sammy Altman on Powerbook and E-drums. They first played on 1/20/2000 at The Knitting Factory in New York, NY.

Moshi Moshi Baby! consists of Magner, Altman, and Liz on vocals (one of the three singers from the Fillmore 2001 shows), and they first played on 6/13/2002 in Santa Cruz, CA.

The Moshi Moshi sound has been a constantly evolving project. In early '04, they were playing in a similar Disco Biscuits-esque style (a la the Sam/Aron jams from Fall '03) , but by March '04 they had developed into a full-on drum'n'bass act, even releasing a limited LP called the "Queen of the Shakima".

What is Conspirator?
Conspirator is a side project consisting of Marc on bass, Aron on keys, and DJ Omen on beats/turntables. Guests with the band have included Jon on guitar and Jake Cinninger (guitar), Brandon Bayliss (guitar), Joel Cummins (keys), and Kris Meyers (drums) of Umphrey's McGee. They have also released an album, The Key, in December 2005. The album includes the tracks Macina Verde, Commercial Amen, and Liquid Handcuffs, all of which have been played live by the Disco Biscuits. Since 2010-2011 Chris Michetti from RAQ has joined Conspirator full time as their guitarist while still featuring rotating drummers.

The opera has been performed in its entirety eight times.
It was also performed on April 1st, 2002, but with "Aquatic Ape" replacing the title song, "Hot Air Balloon", as an April Fool's joke. However, "Hot Air Balloon" lyrics were sung during parts of "Aquatic Ape". In addition, the entire second act (and Eulogy) were played on February 2nd, 1999.

What is the Akira Jam? How do you sync up the audio recording to the movie?
For the 2nd set on New Years Eve, 1999, The Disco Biscuits played along to Katsuhiro Otomo's anime masterpiece, Akira. Starting with just the setbreak DJ spinning, the band members slowly came out one by one onto stage dressed entirely in black robes. Behind them a on a projection screen, the movie played. This "Akira Jam" eventually falls into Basis For a Day to end the set.

As for syncing up the taped set to the movie itself, this is a topic under heavy debate among Biscuits fans. There are many theories as to where you should start the tape with the movie, so it might take you some experimenting to find the best sync. Although there is no real preferred method, these following tips were posted on Discuss Biscuits and are some of the best info if you want to get the sync up working:

"When the 1988 dateline appears, the first note of the DJ spinning should start up. When they first take off in the motorcycles, the beat should get noticeably more intense. When the kid is head-butted by the big Clown leader, the drum machines should stop completely, leaving just the vocal sample. When the first child subject screams after seeing his guardian shot, a phone should ring right at the time the store sign blows up (right before the windows all smash). Hope that will help line it up."

"when the first lick of barber kicks in, it should starting exactly during the scene when a man enters a fuzzy boat"

The helix tease occurs while there is a shootout with the police and yellow/golden helicopters are on the screen.

"I know there is one point in the movie when you see gunfire on the streets. Sam does these cool little snare drum hits."

To try it out for yourself, here's the Akira set on Archive.org
