8.17.97 is by far the G.O.A.T. Gin jam and one of the greatest pieces of music ever played by human beings

lulz There's more to rock 'n' roll than just virtuosic noodle soup that goes to Nowheresville. I'd at least expect the band to utilize their combined talent to make something of value and substance, not just a mushy jambalaya of the Dead, Pink Floyd, and the Sesame Street theme song. All of the poor souls who think they are hearing something interesting talk about how great they are at the segue ... refusing to admit how ridiculously similar all of their songs are. It's not much of a segue if you stay at the exact same tempo (and often times the same key) while switching to another song that has juvenille lyrics, and is the same style and feel as the last song you just "segued" out of. No one in the band really has much talent as a musician - and the stuff they play doesn't require them to. They stick to a very cliché formula. Their original compositions are laughable. The last time I was forced to listen to some heady phish, somebody put on Bathtub Gin and I was just shocked at how stupid it was: structurally, lyrically, and vocally - so childish and boring on all fronts. The "jam" tagged on to the end of it was one chord, the entire time. About ten minutes in, the phans in the room got very excited when the jam "took off". In reality, all that happened was Page played faster, Mike started doubling the bass-line, and Fish gradually sped up. Eventually the keyboard player switched to the "circus" patch, and this really sent everyone into an uproar. Eventually the "jam" reached full noodle mode, and became the standard phish jam. But nothing interesting ever happened ... and nothing ever does.

I don't think I am a troll.

The backwards comment should clearly be taken tongue in cheek though (do tongue in cheek comments make one a troll?)

ETA: I do like TAB though, at least the last three or four times I saw them they were really good.

TAB isn't a bad band. At all.

Both of their shows here were on point, at least if you are able to enjoy something outside of the traditional "jamband" box.

they were actually really good in February I thought.

To answer some of your questions, I do enjoy some of TAB/Phish stupid little songs like Let Me Lie and Joy, etc.

I probably exaggerate how much I enjoy them from time to time for humors sake. But I don't agree with everyone who trashes TAB/almost every new phish song on a regular basis.
