They were all so coked up, plus technical difficulties, that most of the singing (other than Levon) had to be dubbed in the studio - after the fact.

Marty does a good job of making them seem like strong singers at the concert. To be fair they were an awesome live act - just not for that particular show, because there was too much going on.

In fact, when you watch Neil Young, you can see the cocaine, quite clearly, in his nostrils.

My favorites are, of course, Dixie and The Weight (outside of the live show context, with the Staples Singers - back when musicians had this thing called "talent").

My favorite part on the dvd is when Clapton starts shredding and his guitar strap comes unhooked. RR picks up immediately and never skips a beat, like it was planned. Its something that gets missed on audio only.

For those who like Last Waltz, I suggest checking out Love for Levon. Most excellent. Most excellent.

That's pretty awesome but I have to ask. Why thanksgiving?

Growing up my parents listened to 'alice's restaurant' every thanksgiving, so when i had my own family i just added to their classic rock tradition. Since the last waltz show took place on thanksgiving, i thought it was a perfect fit.

Damn I've always considered myself a huge fan of The Band but I never knew that show took place on thanksgiving. I like that tradition though. I've always said that whenever I have a finally I'm going to do something along those lines

I met Robertson one time on Maple Street when Muddy Waters was still a venue. He pulled up in a limo and walked in to watch George Porter and his Runnin' Pardners. He ended up using Porter on his next album.

Anyway, he was friendly enough, but in a noblesse oblige sort of way. I know, csb.

But The Band was one of the best live acts ever when they had their shite together. I remember them at Jazz Fest in the 90's when all of them were there except Robbie. It was a great show even though Danko really had to concentrate to stand upright.

Personally, I have mixed feelings on The Band. Its hit or miss with their songs. Some tracks are unbelievable, but others I hear a cover and think, that's how that song should be played.

But although I disagree with RR as a human, I really enjoyed watching him perform. Maybe it was bc Clapton is God was next to him in NY.

Come on Cotton. The first performance on Last Waltz starts out with the intro "happy thanksgiving". I'd expect you to know this. Haha

The Levon Helm documentary "Ain't in it for My Health" is on Netflix, FYI.

Just found this documentary last night. It's a little sad to see that guy in the state he was in before he died but he always had a fun attitude. I never really got the back story as to why The Band broke up and it looks like there was still a lot of animosity between Helm and Robertson after all those years.

And, my God, Levon smoked a lot of weed.

Rr took all song writing credit when the songs were done as a band and most of the songs were based on levons life.

absolutely awesome. I know my kids are glad I didn't think of this while they were at home.

I'm thinking Jaime Brockett's Legend of the USS Titanic might be a good selection

Richard Manuel's version of "Georgia, On My Mind" brings tears to my eyes every time. He's the most important voice in that lineup, IMO.
