The Church (the band)

I have been a huge fan of the Church since discovering Starfish in some Arlington, TX bookstore back in 2003. That album was obviously their most popular. Every track is damn good and the dualing guitar melodies on that album are as underrated as any criminally underrated statement.
I then found Of Skins and Hearts at the Magic Schoolbus Shop (or whatever it's called) in New Orleans for practically a $1.50. That was the first major release by The Church and it may be their best as far as the ROCK it contains.
Recently, I have downloaded a lot of their other old stuff and ordered some CD's. The Blurred Crusade, Heyday, and Priest=Aura have all recently come to my house via Amazon. My toddler goes to sleep at night to any/all of them. All are just the perfect mix of psychedelic, atmospheric, "stargaze" rock with a mix of up-tempo to the dreamy, slow downed state.
I cannot think of another band that has largely been ignored by the U.S. (only two albums ever charted; 1 single made the top 20) that has a more impressive catalogue. The band has changed drummers a few times and recently lost guitarist Marty Wilson-Piper. Peter Koppes left on two small hiatuses back in the 90's. Steve Kilby still sounds great on vocals. But to sum this post up, this is one of the greatest musical treasures out there and it's a shame that 80 percent or so of the Music Board regulars likely have heard anywhere from 1-5 songs by them as opposed to the over 200 they created through imports, EP's, and killer albums.
Anyone else a fan? if you're not aware of them, please check them out. I'd rate their top 5 albums as:
1. Starfish (1988)
2. The Blurred Crusade (1982)
3. Priest=Aura (1992)
4. Of Skins and Hearts (1981)
5. heyday (1985)

Very underrated band. Reptile is one of my all-time favorite songs. Rarely does one song have both immediately recognizable guitar and bass riffs.

The Church has a good sound. I remember wearing out Starfish a lot in the mid 80's.I got into them about the same time as Hoodoo Gurus, The Smiths and The Cure.

I started getting into them as well. Mars Needs Guitars is in my vinyl collection. I actually found that album at FYE on College.
When I bought Starfish that day in Arlington, TX, I also bought The Cult "Love", The Doors "Greatest Hits", and Simple Minds "Pure Fascination". Yep, The Church springboarded me away from FM radio (dominated by groups like Creed and Puddle of Mudd) and made me rediscover -- thanks to the internet -- a new love for that 1980's dark-wave and dreamy pop rock. The Gurus are awesome. Australia has put out some incredible bands.

quote:GD! The Cult Love album was amazing. Electric didn't do it for me but Sonic Temple was the shite! I remember seeing Cult with Billy Idol at the Forum in L.A. during the Electric tour and they were awesome! Good times!
I also bought The Cult "Love"

Big fan of Church back in the day. I saw them in late 80's (88 i believe) at Tip's. Great show from what I remember.
I did see they just released a new album. I keep up with them from time to time on youtube but have not purchased anything from them in years.

"Reptile" is still a bad arse song, followed closely by "Under the Milky Way." That whole album is great to go to sleep to, with The Cure's "Disintegration" a close second.

I'm listening to these twinks now, very corny music imho .

I completely agree. There is something magical when the right amount of acoustic guitar and the right amount of electric guitar meet.

Huge fan back in the day, had all their albums, even the solo stuff by Koppes and Willson-Piper on Rykodisc.
And as much as I love Starfish, I had already been a fan of them, and was glad for better or worse at times, that they escaped their "Westernized" too tight ways formed from excessive Mutt Lange-esque drill sergeant studio demands by Waddy Wachtel and Greg Ladanyi(two of my fav 80s/90s rock producers) for these Aussies to tighten up their loose psychedelic sound and approach, in attempting a huge breakthrough album for Arista.
