I've been playing forever and never knew this thing existed. I have a hard time playing a 6 stringer as it is; I can't imagine the dedication it takes to plays the Stick.

The first time I ever saw a Chapman Stick it was played by Tony Levin of King Crimson fame, among others. Check out videos & music of Tony Levin.

Interesting. That video instantly made me think of Run Like Hell by Pink Floyd

A lot of people thought Eddie Van Halen invented "tapping" until it was pointed out that that Chapman developed the two hand tapping method of playing in 1969.

Actually, I read that it was an Italian guitarist named Vittorio Camardese who did a few recordings in 1965. Chapman expanded the concept to more than 6 strings.

From the Wiki page on Camardese:
quote:
In fact this technique, now known as tapping , had been used previously by other musicians, like the American Roy Smeck in the thirties. However, the use of original Camardese stands already for some items that a decade later they would have decreed the fortune in pop, rock and fusion. Among these the most virtuosity, not only during speed work, but also in the ability to recreate a level auditory sensation of an instrumental ensemble (bass, guitar accompaniment, percussion), all on a harmonic structure of a mainly jazz.
If the wording sounds a little funny, it's because I translated the Italian wiki page.

Smeck used tapping on the Ukulele. Let's face it, tapping has been around thousands of years. Musicians used tapping to play Lutes back when Rome was the center of the universe.

Wait, it's not the best car ever created?

15 year old me at a market in London thought this was the coolest thing ever. Debated buying one and switching from guitar. Saw a guy playing at the market and bought a CD. You can do some cool stuff with them.
Eliah Levy was his name I think.
