To reverse the other thread where you were asked which bands most people like that you don't like, which band/artist do you REALLY get into that just doesn't seem to get the national/international love you think it deserves?

For me there are several, but the most notable one is Deer Tick.

This board (and the OT before it) seldom mentions them and sure they're somewhat known, but not to the extent that I would have thought they'd be at this point.

Here are a handful of Deer Tick songs that I think are outstanding...

Baltimore Blues No. 1
Twenty Miles
Ashamed

I was late to the Deer Tick party, discovering them in 09 or so, but those are 3 of the better songs I've heard in awhile.

Here are a few others that are worth a listen if you're into this style of music...

Easy - a bit more on the rocking side (takes a minute to get cranking)

These Old Shoes

Dirty Dishes - Very Van Morrisonesque if you like him

Open your mind, click on the links and learn a few tunes from a band you may not be familiar with and hopefully you'll like them.

Aight, now it's your turn. Pimp a band that you think deserves pimping b/c the unwashed masses just don't get it. Go...

{ETA - yes I know that their latest release isn't too good, so don't turn this thread into a Rolling Stone review of their latest album - spoiler alert,it sucks}

My favorite Deer Tick song is "These Old Shoes", man that's a great song.

I don't mind that they didn't but after "Float On" by Modest Mouse came out I figured they were going to take off. It was a really popular song and it came off of a killer album. But, didn't happen.

Edit: I applied "taking off" as "becoming mainstream."

This would actually be a cool band name as well.

I am a pretty big fan of the band, but can understand why a lot of people are turned off by them. They are pretty rough around the edges at times. Completely intentional, of course, but that can alienate a lot of people.

I was really disappointed in their latest record.
It just sounds extremely sloppy and thrown together, which I guess is more like their live show.
I prefer their slower, more haunting tunes to their raucous sound.

Love MM and like you, I prefer that they didn't get too popular.

But compared to Deer Tick, I think MM has had a good deal more exposure.

I'm not saying DT is as good as MM overall, just that I think DT is somewhat of an overlooked band that has put out some underappreciated songs.

Yeah I mentioned that in my ETA in the original post. It's bad.

Would be in my list, but The Raveonettes would be #1. No idea why they only get played on Underground Garage. They have songs that would appeal to many different types. Check out:
Love In A Trash Can

I think Ian Moore was poised to take off. Incredibly talented guy but he just didn't want to be the next Stevie Ray.
I saw him a couple of years ago and I was just disappointed. He was touring with 1 other guy and they were using homemade instruments??? It was just weird. Playing songs that had the same titles but were unrecognizable

I've got one that just recently started to take off. They got some gigs on ESPN commercials for XGames and then also some football game music.

Sleigh Bells

I saw them on their first tour. Their CD doesn't really do their live music justice. These two can put on one hell of a show, if you get the chance you should see them.

The crowd is a little off though, when I went at the Varsity there was more than one person in full body sequence leotards. One guy even had it going over his scalp built so his orange mohawk could come out the top. Very odd, but diverse too; I was there in khaki shorts and a polo t-shirt and didn't feel like the ugly duckling.

Post some of their best songs so those who don't know them can learn about them.

I thought sleigh bells was quite boring live

But I could see them getting even bigger than they are now. Def not a "live" band IMO.

It's a girl singing over tracks, with a guy playing guitar (they use to be In poison the well)

Deer Tick is flippin' great. I understand why they aren't big, though. Really, only their most recent album catches the fury of their live shows. If you just heard their albums, you'd think they were this nice acoustic band who occasionally plugs in. From the "Y'allternative" scene of New Americana, I'm surprised Blitzen Trapper hasn't gone mainstream. Very accessible sound. Avett Brothers are well on their way to mainstream success.

I think it's a shame the Hold Steady didn't become mainstream, but I can see how people are turned off by Craig Finn's voice. Same with Titus Andronicus - I get why they will never be huge.

So why isn't Free Energy massive?

Thank you! Now I know I'm not insane.

Also, I've downloaded a lot of Blitzen Trapper's songs, a lot of Titus Andronicus' songs and a few Hold Steady songs, all of which are excellent.

Of that group I'd say that Blitzen Trapper is the one that would appeal the most to the masses.

I am also not big on Craig Finn's voice and the redundant addiction theme through so many of Hold Steady's songs is overdone IMO.

I'm not familiar w/ Free Energy, post some of their best songs.

Lastly, I've seen Deer Tick and you're right about their live shows. Totally different than the mellow stuff off of the albums and to those who haven't checked them out, look up the "Deervana" videos.

Love Deer Tick and Hold Steady. Anyone listen to Middle Brother? It was a side project with the singers of Deer Tick, Dawes and Delta Spirit. Their first album was quite good

Mrs. Baloo LOVES Dawes. Loves them to an almost unreasonable degree. We're huge Middle Brother fans and so are a lot of M/TV Board denizens. Best album of last year IMO. Got me to check out Delta Spirit.

Like I said, I see why people don't like the Hold Steady. Craig Finn has a voice that turns a lot of people off. I like it, but I prefer distinctive over technically proficient. But that's a personal taste thing. They'll never be mainstream because of it, which is a shame. He's a great songwriter and the band rocks.

I probably was too until Baloo posted some of their music. It's possibly my favorite "new" band right now. So here's your props again Baloo.

As far as making it big, i think some may struggle with his voice. It's sounds perfect on some songs but maybe too much on others. Or at least that's my thinking.

The two that surprise me the most are Cannibal Corpse and Dream Theater.

May seem like a weird 2 to pick, as both have been around forever. . .I just always thought they would be a bigger deal than they were.
