I believe you may have missed the boat on SD if you used the word pretentious in describing their work.

They certainly never presented themselves as an unpretentious three chord rock and roll band
Whenever jazz walks in the door, pretension is not far behind

Steely Dan’s albums had some of the best session musicians in the world. And Fagen and Becker were not slouches.

You wanted to see Steely Dan, and that sucks for you that they cancelled. But never thought I'd see someone complain about getting to see Derek Trucks play guitar

Jazz: the last refuge for the untalented.

We have Tedeschi Trucks instead. A band that would fit in at any county fair in the south.
Wow, just wow. Derek Trucks is a great guitarist with an incredible band.

I would use the term self deprecating. As a huge fan I was disappointed to learn after years of listening to their music that lyrically they treated it all in a sarcastic, humorous way.
They both found fans like myself (who truly believed every word of Deacon Blues) to be odd, and never understood why so many listeners took the music so seriously.
The story about getting Wayne Shorter to play sax on Aja really drives home who they were and how they felt about their own music. I think they did their best to create something that would be considered groundbreaking, but in their minds I’m not sure they ever lived up to the standards set by the true jazz greats.

Because not everyone can play 12 bar blues. On a serious note, I would be interested in knowing your music background

The Tedeschi Trucks Band is marvelous!
It's truly rock 'n roll/ blues rock for the 21st century-- genres rarely heard by any band for at least 30 years. Their music should be heard by all fans of classic rock music

They were just announced as the Friday headliner for Darius Rucker's Riverfront Music Festival on Friday night 10/11. It's a cool scene. Beautiful down there.
We're likely going Saturday Night when Hootie and the Blowfish plays. I prefer Darius' country stuff but it'll still be a really fun day/night.
