I've read he was an unrelenting a-hole.

A true dick.

I never gave it much thought. Most guitar guys are dicks, whether they deserve to be or not. Whose dick is bigger is kind of a calling card for these guys.

I just spent the the last 96 or so minutes of my life watching SRV and Albert King In Session.

About halfway through I started thinking, "What a fricking douchebag".

quote:

Hey Stevie, whats that rap song you got now? Play it, I'll try to learn it.

quote:

I wish I could use a pick, I need to talk to you about that, Stevie. You like a pick?

Then I saw something that blew my mind.

At around 1:13:00, Stevie takes a solo. That motherfricker starts filing his nails during SRV's solo.

HE'S frickING FILING HIS GODDAMN NAILS!

Like, "Yep, when is my part again?"

I thought to myself, "Thats it, this mofo is supreme dickhead number one. Listen to SRV's solo right now. Youre a dick. He's killing it."

Then, around 1:15:00 the ol' cock sucker goes at it.

HOLY frick!

He just fricking rips it apart. Just absolutely kills it.

SRV IS LOST. HE'S TRYING TO FIND THE GROOVE.... WTF?

The kick arse bass player gets him back in the pocket, but WOW!

Muther fricking Albert King just broke it off in his arse. He sat there all night telling him not to get a big head. You're good, but don't believe what you hear, but he broke him down right in front of all of us.

If you play guitar, and you play the blues, watch the whole video, and pay close attention to the body language. It will teach you alot about playing in the shite.

SRV was in the shite there.

I'm convinced it was never a contest with these two. SRV was always Alberts student. Albert gave him about 3/4 for the record company, and then reminded him.

Fan. fricking. Tastic.

he was likely filing his nails because he couldn't play rhythm. Some of blues player that are considered greats can't play rhythm.
He was extremely hard on the guys in his band. Demanded perfection.
Once, he and Buddy Guy were jamming onstage and Albert turned his back to him each time he started to play. When asked why he did it, he said he didn't want Buddy to steal his stuff.
He was either delusional or a real jackass to think that. Probably both.
Then again, SRV copied his licks, so that could have made him think everyone would.

I recall BB King stating something similar about himself.

Albert was the f'n man!! Love his music. I never got to see him perform but always wanted to. Buddy and I did visit his grave in West Memphis, I've got a picture of it somewhere, I'll try to post later.

One of my favorite albums..get it if you don't have it.

"I make money playing notes one at a time."

Perhaps not a direct quote, but it will do.

Albert King was a badass, no question. But also a giant prick. He would get humbled if he messed around with funk, traditional rock, even more R&B stuff, but for straight 12-bar blues players - improvisational, the classics, what have you - I'm not sure he had a peer.

We All Wanna Boogie is a funk masterpiece. Albert was an old school badass. He treated Stevie like a son. No special privileges, all about paying your dues.

That would make sense about the rhythm stuff.

Ive always been freaked out by the fact he plays with the strings upside down.

Those old blues guys are a real thing to behold. I need to go see B.B. King again soon.

I think he tried really hard - and he did some interesting things there, but he just wasn't the giant in funk as he was with straight blues.

I mean - lets take another cat who plays a hell of a guitar and people forget about - Prince - probably a top 5 rock guitarist (talent wise) and a top 5 funk guitarist (if we're being honest) - the prime example of the Minneapolis sound - I don't see him making the transition to straight 12-bar blues without a drop off - and I think he's one of the most talented musicians America has ever produced - but is truly a giant in that notch between funk and rock.

For my tastes, BB King plays more to my preferred style of blues - I kind of think of him as the default blues player, but he is to Albert what David Gilmour is to a player like Satriani - both brilliant, but one more comfortable letting the space between notes have the same voice as the notes themselves, while the other is a more technically proficient virtuoso with the instrument.

I don't know if the odds of that happening are in your favor.

Yeah, looks like hes not touring anymore. Damn shame.

I saw Buddy Guy during the Experience Hendrix Tour when it came out here. That was a cool show.

A legendary and fellow member of the Order of Left Handed Guitarists. Just a great player AND writer, too. So what if he was abrasive and cutting in his pursuit of perfection. A lot of those guys were--Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker to name a few.

No doubt. King did King. He was by no means a funk guitarist like say Leo from the Meters.
