What's the board's opinion on smooth jazz as a genre? Any recommendations?

I'm not into it big enough to make a bunch of recs, but check out the Ben Webster quintet - soulville. Smoothest album that I have ever heard, definitely one of my favorites

I love the smooth jazz genre from the 1980-1990 era.

Just about every artist that recorded on the GRP label (Dave Grusin & Larry Rosen Productions) I like.

Some in particular are The Crusaders, The Rippingtons, Acoustic Alchemy, Dave Grusin, Don Grusin, Patty Austin, Dave Benoit, Lee Ritenour, Earl Klugh, Chick Corea, Larry Carlton, The Yellowjackets, and Spyro Gyra to name a few.

GRP also was an early adopter of full digital recording (using Sony digital tape machines), and they sound it--absolute purity and dynamics in the sound.

I'm more of a classic jazz fan (Bill Evans, Jim Hall, Dave Brubeck), but I'm always down for some Steve Cole on the tenor.

HATE smooth jazz. It's Jazz devoid of anger, angst, longing, depression, aggression, compassion, love, lust, joy, ect. It's mindless background music for people on xanax. It basically is Jazz without all of the things that make Jazz, Jazz, and music interesting.

Don't confuse smooth jazz with cool jazz. I can dig on some "Birth of the Cool" or some Dave Brubeck every now and then. It's not my favorite subgenre, but it's a nice change of pace.

If you have Comcast, they have a smooth jazz music channel. Also, SiriusXM Watercolors channel is pretty good. You start to get a sense of who you like after listening for a few weeks. There is some Toronto group Four80East, that I can dig.
