My take: Skynyrd is the best band America has ever produced. And it’s sad just how good Skynyrd and Ronnie on his solo projects could have gotten in the coming years. But they left behind a catalog that is unsurpassed. When Steve and Ronnie died in the plane crash, it ended LS. I’m not referring to the cover band that tours today.

ABB was a great, tremendous, unbelievable, start to southern rock, and jam band, but just weren’t as driven as Ronnie and the boys. They kicked it off, but LS pushed it to the masses.

Thoughts?

Skynyrd was a (very, very, very good) Southern rock band. The Allman Brothers were a masterful band that could play anything--rock, blues, jazz, country, or any kind of fusion of any of the aforementioned genres. I love Skynyrd but they were a musical solar system. The Allman Brothers were a musical universe.

There is no best America band.

Nor is there a single best English, Tibetan, Black, Hawaiian, Pink Floyd, or Dead band.

I'd say they had quite a bit of tragedy of their own to overcome

I was born and raised on the Allman brothers. I would be interested to know the thought behind "weren't as driven as Ronnie and the boys"

Let's not forgot ALL of the other works Duane was involved in before died. Here are links to just 2. Look at the players involved in these tracks!

Anthology I

Anthology II

Either way, both are treasures.

Depends on my mood; both are great but comparing them is like comparing apples to VWs

Not many people would agree with you. But they were very good.

The Allman Brothers are better IMO.

That's the beauty of music, you can like something different than me.

There is no best "pick your qualifier" band. Music is just too subjective.

In terms of influence and not using solo artists, I'd say The Beach Boys would be pretty high up there. Steely Dan and several other bands people have named, probably some they haven't, are in the same stratosphere.

Not sure by what metric, but to each his own. Setting personal taste aside, here’s my take:

I grew up on ABB, my dad worshipped them and my guitar savant cousin was briefly a member. The insane revolving door of talent that came through their doors over the years coupled with how long they did it and how hard they went til the very end (i.e., Gregg’s death) is hard to match. Not to mention all the studio / extracurricular work Duane did with some incredibly gifted musicians who clearly valued him, plus Gov’t Mule’s astronomical success in their own little corner of the music world.

Lynyrd Skynyrd, to me, had “it”. That special combination of not the most technically proficient, not the best gimmick, not the most creative sound, but got DAMN they were the perfect amounts of the perfect ingredients at the exact right time. They just plain rocked and kicked major arse in ways that ABB, in my opinion, didn’t - at least not consistently. Skynyrd brought the fricking heat on every song, every show. But, they never seemed to be able to sustain it after the plane crash - the fire burned much hotter for much shorter compared to ABB.

As for me? I’m glad I don’t have to choose. We will forever have the magic of both and can turn them up as loud as we want!

there isn't much thought put into that.

The Allmans continued to be an awesome band after Duane and Berry died. Brother and Sister is dickey-driven and still a hell of an album. Duane's death hurt their creative output and the leaned on the more country-jam of dickey than the blue/jazz sound of Duane.

Drugs and ego killed the band going into that 80s but they were still touring. Get on Youtube and watch dickey kick arse during some of those warren/dickey era shows.

they were a factory for elite guitar players up until the end. Saw them a ton in 2000s and still put on a hell of show. 2010 Wanee was my favorite festival i went too

Duane died and they replaced him with Jimmy Herring, Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, and even Dan Toler shredded. It is crazy how they were able to sustain at such a high level

Don’t forget about Jackie, too, baw!

Quick fun fact: Zakk Wylde played a show with ABB in the 90s. There’s audio out there on YouTube, but I can’t find video evidence haha

Dickey Betts was the driving force in ABB for most of their existence. They all complemented each other masterfully.

ABB > Skynrd and it’s not close.

they are pretty collective on the first 3 albums.

Whipping Post, dreams, midnight rider, Don't Keep Me Wonderin, MTn jam are all Greg/duane songs

Then Dickey's got Revivil, Liz Reed, Blue Sky, Les bres

After Duane dies, Dickey does all the best songwriting IMO.

Just my opinion. Don’t beat me up too badly

The ABB had much better and more talented musician. There isn’t a single southern rock guitarist better than Duane. Very few white men have ever sang with the kind of pure soul like Gregg. Chuck Leavell is without a doubt the best southern rock piano player of all time. Now throw in the rhythm section, which was absolutely stellar.

For me, it’s ABB all day long.

It’s all personal opinion. I absolutely prefer Skynyrd but if someone else doesn’t I understand.

I could not have said it better myself! Love Gregg Allman’s vocals, my favorites are his songs from his solo album “I’m No Angel”.

They're both great, but Allmans are a musician's band (speaking as one.)
