On this day in 1985

Don’t You (Forget About Me) video

One of the best songs ever written
A true classic that will never get old.

“Won't you come see about me?
I'll be alone, dancing, you know it, baby

It was written and composed by producer Keith Forsey and guitarist Steve Schiff. Forsey and Schiff wrote the song for Simple Minds

The song was used in the 1985 John Hughes film The Breakfast Club.

"Don't You (Forget About Me)" was a breakout hit for Simple Minds and became an iconic song and a 1980s anthem. The single reached No. 1 in the United States and Canada, becoming Simple Minds' biggest hit in the United States

La, la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la

I always heard it was written & set up for Billy Idol but he backed out thinking it wasn’t edgy enough for him & Simple Minds got it instead & it became a classic

Forsey and Schiff wrote the song for Simple Minds but offered it to several other acts before Simple Minds agreed to record it. - Wikipedia
Offered to Billy Idol (who did perform a version of it in recent years) and Cy Curnin of the Fixx, as well as the others
Not sure who got offered it first

Here's a good article about the history of the song and who got offered it first. (John Hughes wanted Simple Minds to do the song, they didn't want to perform a song someone else wrote.)

Side note: The regular Stereogum feature on songs that hit number 1 is always solid. They've expanded it recently to include songs that topped the alternative charts.

That feature is always a gem. You got some time to kill, you can get all the stories about your favorite hit songs from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s. This week, they did Thrift Shop.

Love the movie, love the song. I graduated high school in 1985, and this song, along with “Purple Rain”, were my high school sweetheart and my songs.

Didn't the band dislike the song after they recorded it?

Hated it

So glad Simple Minds decided to record it. Not a big fan of Billy’s voice.

Live performance 2015
Molly Ringwald dancing in the audience with none other than Taylor Swift (y’all’s favorite topic around here)

Billy's version is fine with me musically.
It's just the fact that we're all set with the Simple Minds' version our brain doesn't want to accept this version

Not sure if that was a rhetorical question but here’s the answer anyway

That song certainly has stood the test of time, great lyrics and I thought he had a great voice. Alive and Kicking was my fav song of theirs.
