Thinking about purchasing a blue bluebird mic, and a Peavey usb mix board to go along with my Pre Sonus DAW. Any suggestions or any tips from the pros? I run on Mac OS. Also have an M Audio midi controller... what else do I need??

Soundproofing so the sound doesn't bounce, really nice headphones, and a band.

Acoustic treatment is more important than gear IMO. You can capture a great recording with average equipment if your room is set up properly. You can have extremely expensive and nice equipment that wont yield a good recording if your room sucks.

My guitar tracking became a lot better and more professional sounding when I bought an Auralex Gramma Isolation Riser for my cab and built a sound wall with a top out of plywood and rigid foam insulation.

I would really invest in a eleven rack set up that comes with Pro tools for this since the price of this is way down.

Sound proof the entire room and use a closet as a vocal recording area. Sound proof it as well.

Instead of a mix board you might want to consider just getting a preamp. It's a bit simpler--you can just focus on getting the best sound and not clipping. You can do all your mixing in PreSonus anyway.

I have one of these but there are plenty of other affordable/quality ones. LINK

You can find relatively cheap small acoustic panels online. To make larger panels, get some 2x4s and make rectangles, fill them with foam padding, and then wrap them in burlap or some other thick fabric. You can make them to hang on the wall, or fabricate legs so you can stand them up and move them around.

PreSonus Studio One

I'm using Studio One, and the Studio192 USB Audio Interface.

Monitors are PreSonus Sceptre 6. Love them.

I'm wanting to start a little slower than that. I watched that cat's setup guide that was extremely basic (which is good, as I need that) - I was actually set up at 1 time on an old PC, but the latency was so bad I abandoned the project. I think I was using a Line 6 PodXT (Pod built in to a pedal board).

I'm considering getting back into it - I'm torn between the Focusrite (which seems much more idiot proof to me) or the comparable PreSonus - the PreSonus is attractive because it bundles with a version of Studio One. So, do I go with the hardware that is a little better, but deal with Ableton (which is supposed to be great for live), or go with what I think is the better Software (PreSonus Studio) and get hardware that might be a little behind for the starting USB end?

Because I know that, down the line, if it all works out, it's all pretty even at the top for hardware.

Or should I use the Focusrite (I'm liking the balance of price/performance of the 2i2) with Studio One?

I don't know if you've ever messed around with it, but PreSonus offers a free DAW called Studio One Free.

I use the Focusrite with this DAW. But I must admit I only use it for tracking. I ask people to mix/master my stuff since I'm not that great at it.

I think better hardware will always benefit you more than better software. For recording to a digital medium, great preamps make a difference. But the sound quality between DAWs can be negligible. If you already have Ableton then I'd focus on good hardware.

I have a Scarlett series 2i4 that has worked really well. Latency was not much a problem once I set the driver compensation in my DAW. The MIDI connectivity is also nice.

Well, I do happen to work for PreSonus, so I am going to tell you go PreSonus

But honestly, nothing that Focusrite sells beats the PreSonus Studio192 interface, especially for the price it sells at.

Let me know if you have any questions. Glad to point you in the right direction.

I love Pre Sonus. I use to be all about pro tools because of the name I guess, but went pawn shopping a while back, came across a pre sonus interface so I picked it up with the mic. I was gonna try to get it to work with my pro tools and said screw It, I searched pre.sonus and found the prime DAW and fell in love immediately. I wont ever work with anything else. Just DL's the Artist version.

Also picked up the Peavey 6 channel USB FX mixer today and BOOOOOM it is a beast. Also got the Blue Bird mic and it is unreal the quality. Im about to be making some hit records out of this camp!!!
