you can't "sell" people on phish. they just gotta figure it out for themselves. i've been to 30 shows going back to 1995, and every newbie i brought along with me loved it....that said, before actually seeing the band live, most of those same folks were pretty "meh" about what they'd heard beforehand. i guess if i had to pick ONE song that captures some quality jamming & musicianship, and i'm assuming you're willing to hear something other than shorter, basic songs, check out "chalkdust torture" from the 'IT' DVD....while 20-something minutes long, there's some great uptempo head-popping jams going on there, while also alternately reeling things in for a breather. i didn't attend this show, but i always reach for this particular "chalkdust" for some reason....
nowadays, the band is hit or miss. if all you're asking for is concise, disciplined jamming, then you might get into current phish....however, the longer, exploratory jams are fewer & far between these days. put it this way: the other day, some people were getting excited when in one of their sets, the first letter of each song performed spelled out "lushington", and people were speculating (in real time) what that would mean for the rest of the set. me, i was like, "lushington?? that's a 10-song set, minimum....unacceptable"

I always suggest 12.31.95 to people trying to get into Phish.

But fantastic? No. I haven't heard anything that makes me say holy shite these guys are on a level all their own and they elevate there instruments to another level
You must know more about music than the orchestras that hire Trey to lead.

We all know Breesus is a joke as far as actual music discussion is concerned

That is the first time in countless threads someone actually linked me to a piece of Phish music that sounded like it was worth half a shite. Thank you very much. I'll admit after finally hearing something posted without having to wade through the bullshite, the guys are talented. Not really my bag, but they have talent.
Thanks mon

I get why someone wouldn't like Phish. They are a pretty weird band to outsiders. The level of talent they have, however, isn't much of a debate. The early compisitons like Foam, Fluffhead, Divided Sky , and the aforementioned You Enjoy Myself showcase the band's ability to write and perform complicated progressive rock epics. Combine that with their zany humor and pop sensiblities and you have the band with the most dedicated following out of any current act.
But like I said, I get why some people wouldn't like it. Long jams aren't for everybody. Most of my friends don't like Phish and a few of my best friends absolutely hate the band and always make fun of me for it.

The Phish is not for everyone
I will say that judging from your past post history on the subject, you might not ever like them, because you have a preconceived notion about them stemming from ignorance and a desire to troll Phish fans on the internet. Even if what you heard was objectively good music, it sux cause like lol Phish is terrible. It's cool, we're all human.
If you really want to like them, and give them a fair shake, listen to the stuff heady posted, and some of their early studio albums, and then get toasted (or drunk if you're a fricking square) and listen to 12/31/95 with an open mind.

No. The reason i never liked them is because every time i asked for a video or something to listen to to get me into phish or show me why people like them I'd get one of two responses: 1) you just don't get it or 2) 6 links to videos all over 90 mins. Heady is the first person to post a concise clip of good music that someone can appreciate not some two hour nonsense i have to wade through. And i thanked him for it.

I thought we were talking about their entire history, not just the current state of the band.

Well if you don't like the 20 min stuff, then I'm not sure Phish is the right band for you. Cause thats when the magic happens for them, not the 5 minute song format.

I give it 5 days before Breesus is a regular in the Phish threads
