I saw this too. Doobies were good but this is about when MacDonald started polluting their sound.

The Stones were incredible as well as VH

Toto? What about the Outfield?

Nothing screams "synth rock" like a band with no keyboard player.

You were too old to appreciate them. Sounds like you graduated in the Seventies maybe. If you were a few years younger and graduated in the early to mid Eighties, you were a Van Halen fan.

That is just a silly, stupid statement. And then after that you diss a supposed millennial for being too young.

So according to you, you are in the sole time horizon sweet spot necessary to appreciate the intricacies of the masterful Van Halen.

What a crock of bullshite.

They were just bad the second time I saw them. Stunk. Sorry if that pops your Van Halen bubble.

Oh, and apologize to the "millennial" as according to you he is too young and tender for real world evaluation.

When I was younger I would be 100% DLR but now Im about even. Sammy has some jams. Poundcake being one of my favorite songs by him.

I liked them with DLR until I saw them in concert
I liked Hagar before, during and after VH
Haven't been able to listen to DLR since that concert

I was at that concert as a 14 year old kid. It was awesome.

That's still the only rock concert I've ever been to. My mom was furious when she found out I went.

I invite you to pick out the keyboard player in the "Your Love" video.

Well obviously they qualify as "synth rock" if a non-member is miming in the background of a video. I stand corrected.

Sammy maintained the band to four #1 albums and many Top 40 hits. The tours were sold out and the band was still a major player. If I grew up on DLR, I would understand the disdain for Hagar and I actually do.

But I've seen Sammy live with VH and solo many times. The guy kicks arse.

I honestly think Van Halen sounded better when Sammy was the lead singer. I love DLR, but Sammy is the man.

Agree....better singer, better songwriter and actually plays guitar.

Okay, I just moments ago watched Keith Richards: Under the Influence on Netflix with a friend, and was telling him about seeking the Stones at that very same show. Then I visit this board for the first time in two weeks, click on this thread, and find your post.

Freaky coincidence...

Great documentary! Netflix has many great music documentaries, but I think I may have watched them all by now...

Van Halen in the late 70's and early 80's were the best band on the planet. Not to mention EVH reinventing the guitar. Sure there were sloppy drunken shows, forgotten lyrics, shortened sets, and probably more than 1 impregnated underage fan, but hey it was all about sex, drugs and rock and roll. The songs were happy, the band knew how to swing, life was good. Life was a big party. DLR era was pure magic.

The Sammy era has some great songs- Poundcake, Summer nights, Best of Both Worlds, Love Walks in, Finish what you started ect.... but this VH was a business, poppy songs, radio airplay, selling shoes and shirts.... and selling out. The magic was gone.

Take a look at the band's two biggest music videos or well remembered - Hot For Teacher + Right Now.

Kinda defines the difference between the two bands.
