LINK Article has a slide show with a brief overview of each album if you're into slideshows. Have to take anything Rolling Stone says with a grain of salt though.

quote:

So when Rolling Stone began picking the 100 Greatest Heavy Metal Albums, we set some ground rules. Although the genre's late-Sixties and early-Seventies forebears – not just giants like Cream, Zeppelin and Deep Purple, but also less iconic yet equally heavy bands such as Mountain, Captain Beyond and Sir Lord Baltimore – created some truly unruly metal moments, their LPs often made folky, bluesy detours away from the maximalism that later marked the genre, so we ruled them out. We did the same with bands that specialize more in hypercharged rock & roll, like AC/DC and Guns N' Roses, but are missing the X factor that separates their music from metal. Similarly, some bands that Rolling Stone deemed metal in the Seventies (sometimes as a pejorative) and made classic albums, like Kiss, Alice Cooper and Grand Funk Railroad, in retrospect sound more like hard rock than the genuine article and are absent here. Lastly, because we sought out only the most consistently perfect metal albums, genre signposts like Skid Row, Testament's Practice What You Preach and even the first metal album to top Billboard, Quiet Riot's Metal Health, didn't make the cut because their track lists fizzle past the hits – making room for more great LPs. (We learned quickly that 100 is a small number.)

They got the bands mostly right, just not the albums. Evanescence and Van Halen aren't metal. I don't know how they can call Motley Crue metal but not Guns N Roses. Not a terrible list overall considering the source.

lol they'll put Images and Words in there but totally forget Metropolis Pt. 2.

It's only to this day the unanimous greatest progressive album of ALL time.

These lists are always a complete exercise in futility. They serve no purpose, nobody ever agrees with them, and in the case of Rolling Stone it's very likely that there is some record company palm-greasing involved behind the scenes.

If you're familiar enough to know some of the more obscure titles there, you very likely already have your own opinions set in stone.

Rolling Stone top 100 metal albums

I was anxious about looking at this list all day. I refused to click on the link to the website because frick Rolling Stone and their out-of-touch writing.

I'm pleasantly surprised and impressed by the inclusion of such a large number of extreme metal and fringe bands. However, there are of course a number of things to critique.

quote:

62. Sleep – “Jerusalem”

It's Dopesmoker you posers/queers. Get it right.

quote:

55. Opeth – “Blackwater Park”

This is arguably the biggest crime of the entire list. How the frick does this masterpiece not even sniff the top-25? Also, every Opeth album from Morningrise to Watershed could have made this list. So why only include one release?

100. Avenged Sevenfold – “City Of Evil”
99. Evanescence – “Fallen”
93. White Zombie – “La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Volume One”
90. Body Count – “Body Count”
68. Marilyn Manson – “Portrait Of Am American Family”
44. Mötley Crüe – “Shout At The Devil”
36. Van Halen – “Women And Children First”
22. Mötley Crüe – “Too Fast For Love”

This is the kind of shite that makes me want to go on a murder spree. The biggest offense and atrocity is Mötley Crüe receiving two selections.

Not only do they have two albums on a list in which Gojira, Dream Theater, Mastodon, Lamb of God, Meshuggah, Death, Neurosis, Opeth, Rainbow, Carcass, and Sepultura received only ONE frickin' mention, but they have the nerve to rank Too Fast For Love ahead of:

97. Gojira – “From Mars To Sirius”
95. Dream Theater – “Images And Words”
86. Lamb Of God – “As The Palaces Burn”
85. Darkthrone – “Transilvanian Hunger”
82. Entombed – “The Left Hand Path”
79. At The Gates – “Slaughter Of The Soul”
77. Meshuggah – “Destroy Erase Improve”
73. Scorpions – “Blackout”
72. Isis – “Oceanic”
70. Death – “Human”
69. Soundgarden – “Louder Than Love”
67. Queensrÿche – “Operation: Mindcrime”
66. Deftones – “White Pony”
65. Faith No More – “Angel Dust”
64. Godflesh – “Streetcleaner”
62. Sleep – “Jerusalem”
61. Converge – “Jane Doe”
57. Emperor – “Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk”
56. The Dillinger Escape Plan – “Calculating Infinity”
55. Opeth – “Blackwater Park”
53. Type O Negative – “Bloody Kisses”
51. Carcass – “Heartwork”
50. Slipknot – “Iowa”
49. Neurosis – “Through Silver In Blood”
48. Rainbow – “Rising”
47. Slayer – “South Of Heaven”
46. Mastodon – “Leviathan”
43. Judas Priest – “Stained Class”
42. Diamond Head – “Lightning To The Nations”
41. Kyuss – “Blues For The Red Sun”
40. Mayhem – “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas”
39. Pantera – “Far Beyond Driven”
38. Iron Maiden – “Powerslave”
37. Black Sabbath – “Heaven And Hell”
35. Metallica – “Kill ‘Em All”
34. Black Sabbath – “Master Of Reality”
33. Megadeth – “Countdown To Extinction”
32. Black Sabbath – “Sabotage”
31. Slayer – “Seasons In The Abyss”
30. Korn – “Korn”
29. Sepultura – “Chaos A.D.”
27. System Of A Down – “Toxicity”
26. Alice In Chains – “Dirt”
25. Metallica – “Metallica”
24. Rage Against The Machine – “Rage Against The Machine”

That is a shite ton of genre-defining and world-class musical talent. The day anyone tries to tell me that Too Fast For Love is a better album than the highest-selling metal album of all-time and any Sabbath record pre-Never Say Die is the day I say frick this gay Earth.

Pump the breaks there, Man. I like where your heart and spirit are, but that isn't close to being a unanimous selection.

Did you see everything behind Rage Against the Machine? I swear that publication has a hard-on for politically-oriented music.

If they have to include Motley Crue, I would go with Dr Feelgood. I would put Skid Row-Slave to the Grind over any Crue album though.

Looks to me like they put up the obvious choices then when they had 85 other selections to make, showed that they have no idea what metal is.

I've always hated lists that are scared to list stuff because it's too mainstream. People hate them, but you can't leave off The Sickness from Disturbed or Hybrid Theory. It's undeniable the success those albums had. The latter has allowed Linkin Park to remain a headlining act at major festivals across the world for almost two decades even though their new music is shite. The downvotes I'll get for saying that are the reason those albums aren't on that list.

Down and Crowbar are conspicuously absent.

I don't understand having one Megadeth album, and it's not Rust in Peace.

It's pointless to try to rank the albums. Lots of great stuff on the list. Lots of head scratchers too though.

Only 3 Maiden albums and Number of the Beast is only #4, should be top 2 minimum, nothing Priest or Metallica did was ever better. They did get many bands on the list right but lets face it bands like Opeth and Mastodon easily could have more then one each. If they had to put Def Leppard on I wish they would have put High & Dry on that was a great album.

This album absolutely MUST be on this list. It begs the question did they not consider prog bands; however, Dream Theater is in there, so that's not the case.

I agree with much of this list though, but I do agree that GNR should be on it. Appetite is a top 5 without any doubt. It's quite strange how they left off certain bands.

I was pleased to see Dream Theater included, but "Scenes" is their no-brainier greatest album. Sub that in.

I also agree that the prog metal genre was generally and unfortunately disfavored in this list. Mastodon "Crack the Skye" and Between the Buried and Me "Colors" should have been shoo-ins. Porcupine Tree's "In Absentia" is one of my favorite albums of all time, but I'm not certain it is properly categorized as "metal." I tend to consider it prog rock with a slight metal bent. Opeth's "Blackwater Park" was a worthy inclusion. That album punches your face.

Finally, how the hell was NIN omitted altogether? Egregious misstep. A case can be made that "Fragile" and/or "Downward Spiral" were among the best metal albums of the entire 90s.

A lot of the list is predictable, with some pleasant surprises (Gojira, LOG, Meshuggah, Dillinger). Rolling Stone is bottom of the barrel trash at this point, so the list seems to me relatively respectable when considering its source.

Fear of a Blank Planet is amazing, but I don't really consider it metal.

Bigger issues for me:
