Have recently started to listen to Jazz. Had the opportunity to hit a few late night Jazz bars on my last few trips and have enjoyed it.

I have tried some of the greats like Miles, Coltrane and Gillespie but would like to try some others.

I seem to like the more upbeat stuff as my favorite so far is Chocolate Chip by Davis...

Any recommendations by the Music board?

TIA

I'm interested too. I really like the soundtrack from LA Noire. I've seen it called third stream, but I'm not yet familiar enough with jazz to really tell a difference listening to it.

Guitarists—Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass. And while a lot of folks wouldn't consider this guy a jazz player, you should listen to Mose Allison's stuff from the late 50's and early 60's ... unless you already have.

Start with the piano. Bill Evans. Go with album "Portrait In Jazz". He went to Southeastern too so there is a Louisiana connection. Buried in Baton Rouge.

I would recommend to check it out, but I don't really think it's an intro kind of album personally. It's pretty far out there and from my experience very polarizing.

As for my recommendations, I tend to like jazz fusion.

Weather Report - Heavy Weather
Herbie Hancock - Head Hunters
" "- Thrust
Return to Forever - Romantic Warrior
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones - Little Worlds
" " - Live at the Quick
" " - Live Art

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones is among my favorites for all musical groups. I guess if you might want a specific song to just youtube, go for Big Country.

Snarky Puppy is a new band and they are great live if you ever get a chance to see them. Kinda Jazz/ Funk.

Art Blakey
Archie Schepp
Chick Corea
Herbie Hancock
Bill Evans
Dave Douglas
James Carter

newer/contemporary:
Colin Stetson
Mantana Roberts
Wadada Leo Smith

John Zorn is probably my greatest musical discovery of the last 20 years. check out some of his stuff:

Masada String Trio
Masada Trio
Sonny Clark Memorial Quartet
John Zorn - Gnostic Preludes

The guy has so much stuff and leads so many different bands it's hard to know where to start and end. incredible talent with a seemingly unlimited muse.
