Plenty of current artists and bands will stand the test of time, and a large amount of them have older roots to them giving a classic sound.

From The Black Keys (Tighten Up, Lonely Boy), Jack White/The White Stripes (Seven Nation Army, Icky Thump) to solo artists like Ray Lamontagne (Trouble, You are the Best Thing), John Mayer (Waiting on the World to Change, Gravity).

Newer catchy stuff with some substance will stick around, just like all big pop songs do. Bands like FUN (We Are Young) and Foster the People (Pumped Up Kicks) have songs that will certainly be heard years from now, wether you like them or not.


It will also have a lot to do with taste. I can't stand 95% of rap music, but it is popular. Wether I like it or not, I know the songs. I like late 90s and early 2000s rap, and hearing stuff like Forgot About Dre still doesn't get old for me. Rap with good hooks and beats like Kanye West and Outkast will last for some time.

Most of my idols are from before the 90s (Jimi, SRV, Duane, BB King, Buddy Guy, David Gilmour to name a few). However, there are some great musicians today who were clearly inspired by the older artists. They are forming their own legacies and their own sounds.

Derek Trucks, Jack White, Joe Bonamassa, Gary Clark Jr., John mayer, John Frusciante, and that's just naming guitarists off the top of my head.

I may be "old" by TD standards (late 30s) but I'm young enough to appreciate ALL forms of popular music. I am NOT saying there aren't great bands and there aren't some great songs since 2000. I'm also not saying there wasn't crap music in prior decades. There definitely was. I just think the ratio of good to bad music was MUCH MUCH higher pre 2000 than since.

P.S. For example, even rap was MUCH MUCH MUCH better pre 2000 than since. N.W.A, Public Enemy, Run DMC, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, etc.

These people don't understand. We aren't going to turn on any songs (that are popular now) 20+ years from now... and be like damn, that was a good fricking song.

I constantly do that now, but I don't plan on doing it in the future with songs from the past 10 years... save a very select few.

Listening to a complete album these days is unheard of.

for some people, yes. but i have a lot of albums made in that time-frame that i listen to from beginning to end
