I have always enjoyed Ray, and I was hoping he would become more than just a unique voice. His new album is different and seems to indicate a change of pace. I have only listened to the first song, but I like it. Pretty haunting:

Disregard my previous link. it was to some weird version of the song. Check out the album on spotify.

Edit:

Here is a better link

His last album was a change of pace. I enjoyed the first two albums. Gossip in the grain was very meh outside of Let it be me. The one pariah dogs album was excellent.

I actually really like Ouroboros. It basically sounds like Ray and MMJ made a Pink Floyd record.

The single, "Hey, No Pressure", might be my least favorite song on the record, fwiw.

Gonna give it a listen, hope it is better than that piece of shite excuse of an album Supernova. Was really disappointed in his last show at the saenger, he only played a couple of his classics.

My Morning Jacket is backing him on his tour apparently, too.

I remember when MMJ was good. Jim James is so fricking over rated.

Agree with all this. He really hammered the new stuff to death at that show. The best part was when he ditched the band, grabbed the acoustic, and starting pouring his heart out with the early stuff for a couple songs.

I agree, but im having trouble getting into it. When i listen to it i think to myself that i'd much rather jim james was singing. I need to give it a few more listens, its quite layered.

Yep, up until that point you could tell the crowd was just like, wtf is this shite.

I gave the new album a listen and none of the songs really stuck out to me. Admittedly I thought it was better than Supernova, but I honestly feel like as much as he wants to shift directions, his voice just isn't suited for this style of music. The whole time I found myself thinking that these songs would sound better with someone else singing it. Maybe it will grow on me with a few more listens.

Jim is appropriately rated as one of the best musicians of this generation, but I sadly have to admit that not even Jim James could make Ray entertaining.
