Tull
Zappa
ELP
ELO
Rush
Strawbs (good to see them getting a mention)
But I think Tull and Zappa are both marginal for "Progressive".

I must confess I find pretty much all of the 'progressive' rock era stuff unlistenable these days. Simply heard it too much at the time. I've tried, I eject after a few minutes. Oh, well.
I do still listen to Crack the Sky occasionally. They've aged fairly well, imo. They're more of a mid '70's band, though.

What is your definition of progressive ? Because Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles were clearly the most innovative and experimental artists of that era.

Yeah, if we're just naming really good bands from the 60s/70s then I'll add Steely Dan, Chicago and Toto.
If Deep Purple is a progressive band then how about Iron Butterfly.
To add to the poster above: Progressive in what sense? Black Sabbath was progressive to the metal explosion in the 80s. Elton John was progressive to 80s pop music. And the Beatles progressed rock music in general for generations.
Not trying to be a turd in the punch bowl here, because we all love music, what is the definition of a 60s/70s progressive band?

There is a severe lack of Camel in this thread.

"Atomic Rooster"...most underrated "progressive" group. Giant, Soft Machine, FZ and the Mothers... And yes "progressive" can be applied to many genres but I think "Prog-Rock" has been fairly well established. I would not include Purple, Cream, etc., but music, being a subjective art form, is first a personal experience and interpretation for each listener. One man's "blues rock" is another man's "progressive"??

Progressive rock in the late 60s/early to mid 70s means to me bands that incorporated in their music classical influences, fantasy/sci fi themes, spacey elements, and superb musicianship.
Cream I think is not, although I love Cream.
Deep Purple I think is, borderline. Rush, yes, somewhat. Sabbath no, too heavy. Same for Iron Butterfly. I like very much all those bands, however.

I grew up with my Mom and found albums such as "Meet the Beatles", "Getz/Gilberto" and Santana "Abraxas" in her very small collection.
Some would not be considered true prog rock but that's OK.
Yes
Iron Butterfly
Deep Purple
Not really Genesis
Camel
Mahavishnu Orchestra
Gong
Focus
Crack the Sky
Happy the Man

Please do not take this as an attack but I cannot understand this sentiment and I hear it a lot. I mean I am 49 and many bands I grew up listening to I still love and never tire of them. I understand that one song played over and over may get old but whole bands and genres are what I just don't get.

That's why I like KC. Fripp copies the jazz tradition and forms a new lineup every few years.
