Anyone seen this documentary on Queen? I saw it yesterday and really enjoyed it.

Has there ever been a more likable group of guys in a famous band?

On a Delta flight yesterday.

Really good. Lots of interviews with FM and the rest.

Three straight-laced, middle-class English honkies fronted by one of the most dynamic singers in rock history - and few will say anything negative about them.

I remember hearing Jackie Stewart's own version of meeting them. Apparently Deacon was a fan when Jackie was still active or just retired from Formula 1 - so this had to be in the mid 70s - anyway, Deacon sends him tickets and backstage passes to the show. Stewart was not really familiar with them, but went, enjoyed the show and met the band. Figuring F1 fan, rock star, he quizzed Deacon: "So, what kind of car do you drive?" Stewart admitted he was thinking Porsche, Ferrari, or being British, maybe a Aston-Martin or Jag, right? Deacon says, "Volvo." Stewart says he was scratching his head after that thinking, "What kind of rock star is this driving a Volvo?"

And all 4 of them intelligent as well.

After watching the documentary I am not surprised. Very down to earth guys for mega stars.

Not one of. The. Hands down greatest rock singer of all time.

The kind that wrote a #1 song. Still amazes me that all 4 members WROTE a #1 song.

They're objectively the greatest band of all time. Doesn't mean they have to be everyone's favorite. But it's truly hard to say something negative. I think Brian May is a PhD now.

100% agree When people are in conversations about male vocalists, I stay out of it. When asked my opinion though, I always say Freddie is the GOAT. It usually ends the conversation, because no one can argue against it.

Just tough to say anything "objectively" about the music business, except record sales. I'll grant you that you'll be hard pressed to find a more talented group in any 4-piece. But, you're not going to run off Beatles, Stones, Who, or Zeppelin fans with a few #1 songs and PhD. (Yes, Brian May holds a PhD, a real, not honorary, one and not in the arts, but in astrophysics.)

And, in another impressive feat, May and his father built a guitar when he was 16 years old. That, alone, would show he was different than the ordinary British kid who got involved in rock music after the Beatles hit it big. However, the Red Special was different, in that this homemade guitar by a kid and his father became the central melodic instrument (other than Freddie's voice) for one of the most successful rock bands of all time.

I...like many late Gen Xers....found Queen through Wayne's World...by the end of MS...I had almost all of Queen's records...they are and remain one of my top 10 for sure...what's crazy is I have more of a country/southern rock vein flowing through me...and Queen still rocked me... and FM..

I say it a bit tongue in cheek, but don't write off the authorship of #1 songs. When your bass player and drummer are doing heavy lifting like that also, then it's really something.

Mercury was an amazing talent, not only as a vocalist but as an arranger and writer. I always loved the fact that they chose Paul Rogers (my personal favorite rock singer) to tour with Queen.

I get it - Queen is one of my favorite bands. I agree with you they're one of the greatest bands in rock history. They influenced so many folks. But, when you say something like "objectively" and then you start arguing subjective factors in a subject like music - there's always a counter.

Freddie is almost inarguable as a front man - almost.

I'd say Paul Rogers is right there. Interesting that he was with Queen for a time.

Although it doesn't need any more indictment, the Rock Hall of Fame continues to be a laughingstock while it boasts:

NWA

Green Day

Public Enemy

And yet neither Paul Rodgers (individually) NOR Bad Company is in.

I always regret never having seen Queen in concert (the proper lineup, not the current one). Wish they toured the US beyond the 'Hot Space' tour...I would've caught a show on that tour, being I was finally old enough to go to concerts, but they didn't come around these parts (which bummed me out, because back then, everyone came around here). When 'Innuendo' was released, I got excited b/c there was some teasing about a US tour. But alas, in hindsight, teasing was all it was, because obviously Freddie was in no shape to be going on the road at that point. Still one of my all-time favorite bands...

Not really interested in seeing the current incarnation of the band....but I admit if they could lure John Deacon out of retirement, that'd be enough to get me on board.

There is ZERO debate who the greatest lead man in rock history is. Freddie Mercury was a once if a lifetime talent. The song "somebody to love" is amazing.
