Pete Townshend is a great guitarist

Once again, I read threads on this board saying that Pete Townshend is an average/above average guitarist, especially regarding his lead playing, and once again I think
IMO, Pete is a great, wonderful guitar player, iconic, prolific, and versatile. Consider his epic riffs, the windmill, the crunching power chords. Great acoustic player, finger-picks with the best of them. As far as leads go, look no further than the extended electric solo on Shakin' All Over on Live At Leeds, and the acoustic solo on Who Are You.
Is he a top 5 or 10 rock guitar player all-time? Depends on your point of view. But to say that Pete is anything less than a great guitar player is untrue IMO and does Pete a great disservice.

I don't know how he would've fared as a sideman in another band, but he had the Midas touch for The Who.

Epic riffs make him a great songwriter.
The windmill makes him a showman
Power chords are nothing spectacular.
I love the Who, but if you're limiting it to "guitar player," he is simply not in the upper echelon. He's a great musician, though.
