Well, I've been cast into purgatory - young granddaughter finally "discovered" One Direction, so I've actually had to listen to some of it. Here's my question: why can't it be instrumentally sound? There's a few tunes for which the songwriters are clearly of decent quality, but the actual sound is so terrible that it just sort of pisses me off. Would there really be a huge backlash if there were a real band playing with good production? Do they play with a band when in tour? What actually makes these sounds? It seems like pure "ambient noise" instead of actual instruments.

I've wondered this for a while about a lot of pop artists and I think it would be an interesting move if everyone in the band learned an instrument and they played their own music.

But even failing that, why can't it just sound like a band? Would that really be a deal killer? If one direction changed to that right now, would they drop off the map?
