Singing on the new disc will be Koerner, J.J. Grey, Erica Falls, and a well-known, big-deal singer who will be joining Galactic on their next national tour. And the name of that singer is … Well, they’re not saying yet, but Mercurio does let slip that it’s an “amazing artist” and a female. And the collaboration could bring Galactic closer to their overdue national breakthrough.

Im guessing norah jones.

Anybody know who it is?

I hope this is the Offbeat author's words and not Galactic's.

Wouldn't really surprise me though. These days Stanton Moore fulfills his jazzy creative side through his trio, Garage a Trois, Midnite Disturbers, etc.. I guess Galactic is the most "mainstream" act of his and therefore has the best chance of breaking through. I feel they already have a big enough national following on the jam circuit though.

Here is my melt to Galactic:

frick you, you goddamn cocksuckers. Why did you have to frick up a really good thing? Why, Goddammit!! You had this awesome thing going with playing live improv. of classic New Orleans funk and you gave it a hip and new twist. It was funky and it was fun and people loved. and then you GODDAMN IDIOTS went and fricked with it. You added a little bullshite here and a lot of bullshite there and you walked away an entirely different band that was stuck in a mound of their own bullshite. You had it all and you went and fricking blew it, you stupid frickers! Your old fans fricking hate you, now. Was it worth it to appeal to a different crowd of people, one that consisted of county yuppies that like chick rock with a N'awlins twist. Feel proud Galactic, you appeal to fricking turd bags now. Have fun at Tipitina's this New Years, Cause I wont be there listening to your "New" Twist and sound. Enjoy putting out your album with motherfricking Macy Grey or who the frick ever, I wont buy it ever. Eat shite Galactic, dumb fgts

I just missed out on the Houseman era (although I had the We Love Em Tonight live disc),and the first 5 or so shows I saw were all-instrumental. When the hip hop came it was different, but not bad since they had some great MCs in rotation (Chali 2na, Lyrics Born, Boots Riley, and Juvenile) and none would overstay their welcome. It was like 75% instrumental funk and 25% hip hop, an enjoyable mix.

I want to say it was around 2010 when the Corey Glover/Dave Shaw/Maggie Korener era arrived and the show took a deep dip in quality.

Ya-ka-may kickstarted the Decline. Their most recent Live album, 2011 I think it came out, had Cyril Neville on vocals and it was actually really good. Since then, it was all down hill. Glover wasn't too bad, but Koerner just killed it for everyone. It wasn't even that douche Shaw, it was some chick from Shreveport, and now it will be Vanessa Carlton or Michelle Branch that makes it almost unwatchable.

Thank God for Stanton Moore Trio...they actually still funk

There are few things that give me as many embarrassment goosebumps as when boomer moms describe things (usually an asymmetrical haircut, a slightly weird blouse, a terra cotta tea pot, or a vase with watercolour red chilies painted on the side) as “funky.” And while that adjective doesn’t always intersect with the actual genre of funk music, it does on Galactic’s new single “Dolla Diva.”

The song is at once funky and “funky,” a mess of derivative fuzz bass and funk guitar, plus some endlessly goofy white-boy sing-rapping. That’s all well and bad, but the lyrics bring it to the next level of cheese, and that title alone is some deeply disturbing funky mom material.

The phrase “Dolla Diva” is the sort of thing that’d be encrusted with shitty plastic diamonds on a tiara that someone would give to their coworker, a self-described cougar who trawls dollar stores for discount leopard print martini glasses and super-cateye reading glasses, at a Secret Santa.
